Ashton is 2months old and is not satisfied after his bottle. He wants to drink 120ml every 2hrs!! Ive upped them to 150ml hoping he will be satisfied but his not he wants more!! My cousin added 1 teaspoon of rice cereal (4months) to his milk, is this ok?? It seemed to keep him full for abit longer.
I was going to suggest this also, my boy didnt seem to get enough milk and you only need 1 scoop every 2 or 3 bottles (my niece had it put in everyone of her bottles and she ended really really chubby) and so i used this and it works like a charm.
I was like giddyupgirl. Zackary was a really hungry baby. I breast fed him for a week but that just didnt seem strong enough for him, so i then moved him on to a bottle. He was drinking double what was recommend every 2hrs. That was only makin him last 3hrs. So i asked my mum what i could do. She suggested that i put some rice cereal in his bottle. This worked wonders. He never had a problem with his bowels. Yet Mikayla was very differnt and was breast fed for 6 months with no problems. My 3 brothers and most of my nephews and i were all fed on rice cereal from a young age and have had no problems, but its one of those things everyone has there own choice. Good luck with what ever way you choose
Like every one has said NO NO NO... Little Ashtons tummy isn't up to it yet. MY H used to always feed every 2 hours. He was also bottle fed. He never used to drink the recommended about of formula that is stated on the back of the tin. I used to worry that he was feeding too often and not enough, but as hard as I tried he wouldn't change. I new he was ok as he was growing, putting on weight and his nappies were wet etc....
What you could do is try and hold him out for an extra 5 - 10 minutes and then when you do feed him put in 125- 130mls and see how he goes. Keep extending the time and then increasing the amount and see how he goes.
If this dosen't work then I wouldn't worry too much about it, every kid is different!
Definately not ok to be giving rice cereal in his bottle, his little tummy is far too immature to cope with it, have a look at this link www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html which will tell you the reasons why. My older two were having around 200+ mls in their bottle at that age so go ahead and give him a bigger bottle but please avoid the rice cereal for a while yet.
It isn't recommended to give anything other than formula or breastmilk until AT LEAST 4 months (but waiting until 6 months is better) because a baby's tummy isn't mature enough to digest anything else and research has shown that introducing foods too young can lead to food allergies. As to adding rice cereal directly into a bottle, it can cause over-eating. I know our parents did it with us but it doesn't mean it is a good idea. My daughter was eating closer to 200 ml at every feeding by 2 months old. She has always been a good eater and is in no way over-weight. In fact, she is a skinny little girl. I would increase the amount at each feeding. Babies will not over eat as long as they are getting only the type of food needed for their age.
I had a 9 1/2 lb baby who breastfed every two hours like clockwork and sometimes even needed a bit of formula in between because I couldn't keep up.
It was suggested to me by a nurse friend of mine to add rice to his milk to keep him fuller longer, and I asked my pediatrician about it, and he was horrified. He said in no uncertain terms NEVER to add baby cereal to a baby's milk.
'Course, this is the same guy who told me I shouldn't give my baby water, either, and since you were told the opposite, I guess you'll have to make the decision for yourself on whether to take that advice. Why don't you ask your child's doctor or call his nurse?
NO NO NO to the rice cereal . . . ALL childhood specialists warn against any form of solids until 6 months of age. This is because a bubs tummy is not yet mature enough to handle solids . . . . Recent studies have proved than in most cases bubs feed solids too early do end up with tummy problems later in life . .
Judging by what Ashton is having I would say that he is simply wanting more milk and that is normal . By his age my girls were on 180-200mls each feed. . . So go ahead and offer him some bigger bottles bit stay clear of any solids for a few months more . .
Dannii, I had a look at both Ruth and Caty's diaries, and both were taking 220ml to 240ml by two months!!!!!! I phoned and asked a friend who has a Bub same age as Ashton and her little boy is also on 220ml every two to three hours. Sounds like he is going to be a strong chappy, like our lot. Dont be afraid to feed more milk, it is safer than feeding any solid at this stage, as the others have said.
Also what stage Milk is he on? He could be ready to move to second stage, or hungrier baby mix, if he is still on new born milk. I know my two were moved on to second stage by the health visitor by 7 weeks.
Don't be afraid to make up full bottles and allow him to feed till satisfied, then you can see what he really needs.
hey Danni, I gave my son rice cereal when he was 3 mths old and he paid for it big time. He ended up have very bad bowel problems and had to have supositries(SP) up his little bum from 4 mths old. His tummy wasnt ready to digest food at this age and thats the reason why nurses and drs strongly suggest not to feed your baby solids till 6 mths old. I did give myah solids at 5nhalf mths old and she has problems but i think its because she has a tolerence to some foods like dairy or wheats. He grew up being sensitive to alot of foods and was milk intolerant quite badly. I would really go and talk to your dr about this before hand sweetie, i know its hard hearing them give a hungry cry but maybe up his bottles....they go through these growth spurts on and off....he is thriving!!! Your doing well!!
Hi, I am from the old school of thought where I believe it doesn't harm your child to add a little rice cereal to his bottles. Both my boys had "top-ups", my eldest was breastfed but soon this was not enough so he had one bottle before bed with cereal, he slept the whole night through happily. My youngest was bottlefed (lost my milk) and he was constantly hungry so he had cereal in one bottle to start with and this then built up. My mum was a midwife and she actually advised I do this with my boys. Start off with the last bottle before bedtime and see how you go. If you need to add it tomore bottles so be it. Some babies are "piggies" and need a bit more substance in their feeds. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work but if it does then all is good right. Some people believe that their systems can't cope with more complex feeds before about 12 weeks but it didn't harm me, my brother, my boys or plenty of other people I know. It's up to you but if you feel comfortable doing this and it puts your mind at ease then it's the right thing for you. Good luck.
i would be asking the gp & see what the gp says as you have to be careful he doesnt end up having probs passing through the bowel hun thats the last thing you need, my girl went through it & it wasnt nice i still remember it & now she is 17..
