Second opinion on birth options

I have a friend who is 43 and 38 weeks pregnant with her first baby.  The 36 week scan was ordered and confirmed the baby was big, but the doctor in charge of her care says the baby isn't that big and left her to wait.

Without causing my friend more concern I want to find out if it is possible to get a second opinion in a hurry. Has anyone done this?  How have you gone about this?  Not sure if you just turn up at a major hospital or what you do.

Re: Second opinion on birth options

Late estimates on size are notoriously difficult to do, and in my experience ALL my friends who've been told their baby is big have given birth to a baby at least a pound lighter than the estimate. In fact, one was told baby was 12lbs and he was more like 9lbs! I would personally encourage her not to stress, make light of it if you can. If she's afraid it could turn out to be a lot harder than if she's feeling confident. And no-one knows how big they personally will stretch to until they are in labour, there's just no way of knowing, so a big baby could well come out of her easier than a small baby out of someone else.

Re: Second opinion on birth options

my baby was supposed to be minimum 9 pound and he was 7 14, just really long!

babies come in all diff sizes and mums manage natural births im sure your friend will be fine and if the bub is to big they will asess that at the time and give her options.

Re: Second opinion on birth options

This late in the day it's probably not worth worrying about anything. She is about to have her baby and that's stressfull enough. If there are any problems during the labour the hospital will be well prepared for any eventuality. A natural birth is always the best outcome and I'm sure that's what her doctor is hoping for. If she needs medical intervention they will be ready for it. So what if it might be a big baby, lots of women give birth to big babies naturally every day.

sh's 38 weeks she will go any day and the doctors cannot tell what size the baby is no precise readings, especially at this late pregnancy by ultrasound.don't stress it is the size it is and there's no changing it.as long as all the major organs and all limbs toes fingers and a HEARTBEAT why worry??there is only one way out and no stopping it!!why pt for a cesar i took a year to recover from mine and 2 painful infections.natural is best unless baby or mum in stres during labour.

Re: Second opinion on birth options

My mother and laugh about our experience with the "big baby scare" as we call it. Upon having my second son and going for my weekly check up they told me they had to induce my labor because the baby was showing big and if I waited a week he could be 10 pounds. So we head off to the hospital since I was due any day any who. The head doctor was there and asked why they admitted me for inducing labor and we explained. He said he looked at my ultra sound and the baby was fine, But he induced me anyway. My son was a healthy 8 pounds 5 ounces. I would say to relax if the doctor says so. Visits at the end get more frequent and if they feel the need they will send her off to induce labor. My doctor preferred the wait but unfortunately the "big baby scare" prevents you from experiencing the play by play contractions count down like I had with my first son.
