Home made Yoghurt!

Hi!!

Does anyone out there know how to make homemade yoghurt??? Is it simple / hard to do???

My 21 month old loves yoghurt and I buy the plain vanilla type but would like to be able to make my own if it is simple and cost effective so that I can regulate how much sugar etc is added...

Thanks

Re: Home made Yoghurt!

By far the easiest way is to use a yoghurt-maker (kitchen appliance) otherwise it is very difficult to keep the temperature right. I don't recall the actual temp needed; just that its a little cooler than wrist-temp. You need some yoghurt to start it, so get some plain yoghurt made in the traditional way (it should say so on the tub). Maybe a third of the container should be that. It works better with milk that hasn't been pasteurised (but that's hard to get these days unless you know a dairy farmer; that's when I made it). You might try using a good thermos.

Good luck. My daughter loved it too; I could add plain unsweetened yoghurt to anything & she'd love it! Gives vege mixes a nice cheesy taste too.

Hi Rosalinda,

Thanks for the info, I will look into a yoghurt maker. And unfortunately no dairy farmer in the family or close by so will have to use what is available.,..I like the idea of it on the vegies to... with a bit of sweet chilli sauce (mmm sorry haven't eaten yet...)

Thanks again

Re: Home made Yoghurt!

A family I look after make it in silver bowls. They do it in India all the time apparently. Use about a tablespoon of the yoghurt you already have and add milk. Heat it on the stove till boiling. Once it is cooled a little they leave in the pantry real dark covered with heaps of cloths. The next day it is ready. You make another lot with a tablespoon of the last yoghurt each time so sounds a lot like the yoghurt maker but without the modern gadgets.

Re: Home made Yoghurt!

Hi winja,

Thanks for that, good to hear that you actually do it now and that the yoghurt maker is worth it(I don't need another appliance in the cupboard that I dont use cause it is too hard...) but saving on the cost of yoghurt would be great...It is very expensive...

Thanks again
