Mirena

Hi my doctor suggested that I have a Mirena IUD inserted to help with my heavy periods. He wanted to do it then and there but I chickened out. Has anyone had one inserted in a doctor's office? Did it hurt? Have you had any bad side effects from it? Someone on this site mentioned back ache and depression. Has anyone else experienced that? I am a wuss and I don't like pain!!

Re: Mirena

Hi there,

Sadly I too have heard far more horror stories about the use of the Mirena as opposed to other methods of contraception. My GP and a few nurse friends also talk highy of this device but amazingly none of them have actually used it themselves . . . Personally I think that even though this is your choice I would strongly recommended doing some major reaseach on it by asking women who have ever had this device.

Cheers Kellz

Re: Mirena

Hi, I have one and I have to be perfectly honest and tell you I hate the thing! My doctor advised I have one as I am very fertile and I have had a blood clot. He felt that staying on the pill might be dangerous. I have had the Mirena IUD for nearly 2 years now. It was quite uncomfortable when it was implanted, which was in the doctor's clinic. I wouldn't say it was painfull but it wasn't very pleasant. Since that time I have not been able to keep a track of my periods as they are now random. Sometimes they are of a normal flow like they used to be but most of the time they are weaker but more frequent. I may have a period one week and then get another lighter one the next. I have had some discomfort from it from time to time. Certainly in the 3 months I had quite severe discomfort and was going to go and get it removed. Suddenly it seemed to stop so I persevered with it. Now I get discomfort randomly but not as severe as in those first 3 months. I have to admit that I won't have one again. I think it has affected my libido too as that seems to have waned since I've had it. Sorry to paint a poor picture, it's only my view. I would like to think that there are more women out there who find it the best form of contaception ever. But for me, it's not. I would rather take the risk of a blood clot than put up with another one of these.

Re: Mirena

I had big problems with my mothly problems as well due to heavy bleeding and clots. The best thing i did was to get a hysterectomy and all my problems were gone . I know it may not be the best for everyone, but get a second opinion to see a specialist .

Re: Mirena

I haven't had personal experience but someone on here was trying to warn against this product because of the bad side effects. I would search for the information in the advice or google because it didn't sound very nice some of the symptoms many had got from it.
