Re: bedtime

My 9 year old and 10 year old both go to bed at 8.00 on school nights, lights off at 8.30.  Weekends they usually stay up till 9-9.30, sometimes later depending on what we're doing and what mood i am in.

Re: bedtime

I have a 9 yr old daughter that argues the same factor.. I think 8.30pm is a reasonable time for school days but on a weekend i'll allow 9pm or maybe 9.30pm depending.. When i discused this with her she took it in and was fine

Re: bedtime

Hi..I had to go to bed at 8pm when i was younger..around 10years old..id say your the parent, stick to the rules.Even 8.30pm during school days and 9pm in the weekends..i'd say thats fair enough..if you say yes to 9pm everynight then it might be a bit hard for him to get up in the mornings for school or worse tired/sleepy at school..good luck

Re: bedtime

If it is 8.30 to bed everynight, you could try  9pm on  the weekends for a couple of weeks to see how he goes the next morning...if his fine maybe then you could allow to stay up till 9pm.

Re: bedtime

You have to be careful because if you amend the time now you could get into a pickle later...LOL

I woudl give it a go for now and see how he handles things in the morning after a little less sleep. Make sure to set the guidelines prior to letting him stay up later...KWIM Good luck!!!

Re: bedtime

usually when they are old enough to debate a rule is usually time to amend a rule. i would say if hes getting up fine in the morning for school then 9 shouldn't be a problem.

Re: bedtime

I'd say it depends how grumpy & hard-to-get-out-of-bed-in-the-morning he is. If he's bright as a button in the morning & doesn't get sleepy or grumpy thru the day, you might try splitting the difference; 8.45pm; & see if stays morning-happy. If he isn't morning-happy, there's your answer; stick to 8.30pm. The amount of sleep a person or child needs is very individual. Some sleep deeper (more effectively) than others. When someone's fighting off a bug they need more, etc. Its good to negotiate with kids 'coz they're learning a useful skill & it helps them to feel like participants in their own lives.

Re: bedtime

From what I remember when I was a kid, mum had me in bed at 7.30pm up until I was about 13 I think...

I say your the parent you decide..

But if you want a comprimise, send him to bed at 8.30pm and then make him read for 1/2 hour.. :)

Good luck... Bed times can be such a battle.. Most of all when some parents let their kids stay up until they are ready to go to bed...

Re: bedtime

Its more important how much sleep he's getting - work backwards from when he needs to get up (and make sure you add in plenty of daydreaming time if he's like that)!

I found a list a year ago about how much sleep kids need. I bet most 18 year olds are sleep deprived!

  • a 5 year old needs 11 hours sleep.
  • a 9 year old needs 10 hours sleep.
  • an 11 year old needs 9.25 hours sleep.
  • a 14 year old needs 9 hours sleep.
  • an 18 year old needs 8.25 hours sleep.

Hope that helps!
