Constipation in 6 month old

My baby has started on solids and has been getting constipated... what foods can I give her ( or shouldn't be giving her) to avoid this problem? She won't drink anything except for breastmilk...

This could be a sign that her digestive system isnt ready for solids, its OK for her to just have breastmilk, most doctors actualy recommend giving breast over solids. Maybe wait a week or two and slowly reintroduce bubs to solids. starting with rice cereal.

Also you could eat or drink some prunes and it will come out thru your breast milk and relive your bubs constipation

Try a small amount of prune juice on her rice cereal.  Works wonders.  Also lots of pureed fruit helps.

Re: Constipation in 6 month old

Hi there,

My little one got badly constipated with rice cereal! I eneded up using cooled bolied water to really water it down and gave her a sipper cup with cooled boiled water in it to play with to try and get her to up her fluid intake! Show her how to hold the cup and pretend to drink from it so that she might have a go! Once my cherub started on stewed pureed  pear and then a couple of weeks later, apple, the problem let up a little. If you are giving her rice cereal, try watering it down a little more. Try adding stewed and pureed pear to the rice cereal. Give it a few days. If she is still having problems, you may have to get some prune juice  to add to the rice cereal. Alternatively, you could use 2/3 stewed and pureed pear to 1/3 rice cereal. Also, try gently massaging her tummy to help move things along - clockwise is the way I think it goes from memory! As their little tums are used to a l fluid diet, sometimes solids can bind them up a little. If she is still having problems, see your child health nurse or your doc! .

Yeah, I add stewed fruit to porridge and puree carrot or whatever to baby rice.  Fruit and veg on their own go whoosing thru and out the nappy but mixed together we have a happy balance.  Heinz do some fruit juices for babies you could always try on those?
