Toilet Training ??

Ok I have tried researching this topic on here but the info I found is causing more confusion, basically my 17 month old boy wont keep nappies on he will walk round trying to take them off, he also tends to stop wat he is doing when it he poos, then just looks at me or my partner like well are you going to give me a change, but as he is behind in his speech he tends to only say a few words and cannot tell us if he has done a poo or a wee.

Is he ready for Toilet Training or should i wait for a few more signs. If so what are other signs i should look for??

Re: Toilet Training ??

I'd say your son is definately ready for toilet training. I had a daughter who did exactly the same thing when she was 16 months old, she wouldn't wear nappies in the day and kept ripping them off. By the time she was 20 months, she was toilet trained and only had to wear a nappy at night. Good luck with it all, you are very lucky to have a smart little boy who is ready to be toilet trained, it will be so much easier for you in a few months time.

My "nephew" will take off his diaper is it gets uncomfortable or his parents are a little slower than he likes for a change. But watch if they're playing with the contents- that can be a warning sign of stuff. But them rolling in it once they take it off in the night is not a concern... strange humm what they tell us to worry about and what is supposedly normal...

Re: Toilet Training ??

Well, I JUST potty trained my boy, so I might can help!  First, I woudl make sure your babe knows teh diffrence in a poo adn a wee... it sounds ridiclus, but that was a big problem for us, I kept telling him so go potty, so he woudl sit on his potty and then not know what to do...  when you change his diapers just let him know that he went pee or poo adn start explainign to him what he did...

also,if he knows he needs a new nappy then he can be potty trained.   go ahead adn just try to let him run around with out a nappy on... if he misses the potty just clean it up and then let him watch you put it in the potty... reinforcing that that is where it goes now....   If he dont have a small potty for him, try sitting him on the big potty backwards so he wont have to hold himself up... tho if he goes poo it  will make a mess so make sure you watch for signs of what he is doing! LOL

Re: Toilet Training ??

You can start toilet training whenever you want; just hold him over the toilet or potty after he's eaten or had a drink & congratulate him like mad if he does something. I'd keep the nappies on betweentimes tho if I were you. Use one-piece overalls (button at shoulder) to keep them on so he can't get at them. When the weather's warm enuff, have him outside on the lawn with bare bum so he can notice what's happenning better. In the meantime, let him watch you & Dad use the toilet & maybe get him a potty for his room. Have fun!

Hi,

I think you should wait a little while longer, give him a few more months, it's most likely that he just likes the fact he can get your attention by taking his nappy off. Maybe try pull up nappies in preparation for potty training but use them in conjunction with stickers and if he takes his nappy off then let him know that there will be no stickers. Also maybe you could put 'big boy pants' on over the top of his nappy which may make it a bit more difficult for him to actually take the nappy off.

Re: Toilet Training ??

My little fella is the same - he started wanting to use the toilet at 14 months, so we'd ask him and put him on. Now, 10 months later, he is still in nappies, but will go to the toilet at nappy changes, before bath and sometimes before bed. Beauty of boys is that you can see if they need to go! 4 months ago, I did put him on the toilet when he didn't want to go on it, and then he stopped for 5 weeks, so be careful that you don't force him if he doesn't feel ready. If he can tell you yes and no, that's all you need. Ask him each and every time - he may be little but he still has a right to have a say over his body and it's functions, I think!

Good luck, have fun, and don't stress - he's still little!

Unfortunately he only says mum and dad reliably everything else is mimicking us, we will ask him something and his answer will still be in baby talk. I wouldnt be so confused if he could answer me with a yes or no.
