How can I strengthen her legs?

Hi all,

My Krystana is nearly 11 months old and still prefers to sit up, but not crawl or support herself on her legs very well. I don't have a "jolly jumper" or a walker, which I think would be just perfect to help her use her legs more, to build strength in them. Is there anything else I can do? Can't buy anything atm, so it will have to be something I can do at home. Cheers.

Re: How can I strengthen her legs?

With everett i have been holding him on my lap and making him stand up on his own. i just play games with him like i will throw him in the air but he has to stand first so he springs up so that he can fly. I also make him stand on the ground or in the cot before i lift him. It makes him want to learn to stand up on his own so he can get what he wants.

Re: How can I strengthen her legs?

I wouldn't be concerned, not yet anyways.

My "nephew" was really slow at crawling and walking. We were almost concerned about him. But you know what the probem was? The house was too small!  yup- there was no need for him to crawl because there was only a few feet between things and he could reach most of what he needed easily. Also, he was already being taught what he couldn't touch, and so he just didn't bother...

He learned to crawl at about a year old, when we went on a camping trip. We put a blanket on the grass, and later a tarp. By the end of the month long trip, he was crawling about 20 feet and just about crawled away from home. I do think that with out that trip, he'd've gone straight to pulling himself up and walking... He's a bright little boy.  He's been talking in two and three word phrases since about 9 months... Goes to show kids grow lopsided! Oh well. God created us each in our own special way!

I Am's child.

Re: How can I strengthen her legs?

I wouldnt be worried at this stage if you want to help her along try some physio type exercises rotating her legs etc and making a home made ramp encourages them not to high and under supervision the tilt encourages them to move forward...they are more for physio but why not? put something exciting just out of reach she'll be off in no time..good luck!

Re: How can I strengthen her legs?

Hi There, Don't stress as each each child reaches milestones at a different pace. Not all children crawl before they walk. You don't need jolly jumpers or walkers. Hold her under the arms and lift her up and put her down so her feet touch the ground. Do it several times. You will probably find that her feet and legs start to push up and off the ground. tHIS IS EVEN MORE FUN IN WATER! When she is laying down, push against each foot alternately like she is riding a bike. Stand her up and hold her hands and see if she can balance. Put her favourite toy a metre away from her and encourage her to come towards it. You might find that she will go from sit to walk rather  than crawling. If, once she turns 13 - 14 months and she is neither pulling herself up and walking with support or crawling, you will probably need to get her checked out by a paediatrician. ( Apparently I was one that NEVER crawled, couldn't care if things were out of reach, but when i was 12 months old, I just stood up and toddled! My cherub wriggled her way across the floor at 5 1/2 months AT GREAT SPEED-  but didn't hand and knee crawl until 10 months old and then 4 days before her first birthday, took her first steps.) ALL BUBS ARE DIFFERENT! Good luck!

Re: How can I strengthen her legs?

Hi,

My daughter is 11 months today and it has only been in the last week that she has started pulling herself along on her tummy. She isn't crawling yet but all children reach their milestones at different ages.

There isn't much you can do to help strengthen her legs she will do it in her own time. If you are worried speak to your doctor or health nurse and they may be able to help you. Some local health centres have a hire service where you can hire things like walkers.

Hope this helps,

Juzzy
