quilts

A really random question here folks! I've been worrying about fuel prices and how I can make small changes to keep us all warm this winter. I've purchased some new duvets/quilts for us all and it specifies that winter quilts are 13.5 tog. When I tried to purchase a sleeping bag for my baby, it states that winter bags are 2.5 -3 tog???? This confuses me greatly as that is very light in comparison to the quilts. Any ideas on why this would be so?? My house is really big and im worried that it will be very cold and you are not supposed to use blankets or anything else in addition to the sleeping bag?

Re: quilts

I'm not sure exactly what your numbers mean, I'm not familiar with those.

But I know this- sleeping bags for camping are usually temperature rated here. There are summer and winter weights, and usually the ones for children are summer wieghts. I guess they figure people don't take their children winter camping, LoL.

As for blankets and the like, again, I only know about the sleeping bags for camping, and there is no problem putting liners or blankets inside them. If your really concerned about breathability, the I wouldn't. My understanding is that the most recommended way to sleep is naked in a temperature suitable bag. something about the layers in the middle prevents the sleeping bag from working properly. But unless your climbing the hymalya's (pardon my spelling), or doing winter camping in northern Canada, I don't worry about it.

In the house, I find that sleeping bags can be very sweaty. Again, I mean the camping kind. They are really designed for those cold, cold nights- at least the fall and winter rated ones... (mine are rated to 20-35 below C), and just leave you sweaty if you use them indoors.

My personal favorite is one of those thermal blankets- the ones that are almost knit looking, with a fleece on top. If I'm still cold, I like a thick duvet on top. There is something about the termal blankets that their almost useless on their own, but under something else they can really make a big difference! Those thermal blankets are also nice alone for summer time when you want to cover up without sweating your rear off!
