Re: are they put to sleep??

hey there.. my 4 month old was recently in hospital and to get a sample from him they put an adhesive bag aroung his genitals until they got what they needed.. i really can't see why they would need to interfere with a baby if there are other options available..

if a catheter is ever mentioned just request the bag.. easier for them anyway - works on girls too- and far less uncomfortable and invasive for baby..

Re: are they put to sleep??

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about putting him to sleep as we would a sick cat or dog!  Please excuse the lack of sleep.

Hun, I've never had experience with a catheter, though have been threatened with one when I had a really bad bladder infection.  I was told that it is a simple procedure that didn't really hurt, was just uncomfortable.

I've had to help cathedorise a lamb before, and  the lamb was awake through it all, so I imagine it would be the same with a human baby (the things you learn on a farm! lol).  Just try and keep calm and hang in there.  Whatever method they use, it should be quick and painless.

Re: are they put to sleep??

hey there,I am a nurse and have looked after many babies needing a catheter. they can do it externally with a wee bag however it is not sterile therefore they will not get a precise result. So if they are thinking bub is very unwell then a catheter is the go.  catheters are just uncomfortable they don't actually hurt. and it is over very quickly. The other route of getting urine from babies is a needle into the bladder from the tummy, very quick but depends on babies age... goodluck

Re: are they put to sleep??

Bailey had this done its so simple not ivasive at all ,they basically put his widgy in a bag and stick it to his skin like a plaster(only going rd to prevent leaks), he sld be no more distressed than he wld with a usual nappy change you cld do it yourself if you want...I paniced too, sounds awful for a baby too but it really isnt at all, I'm sure all will be fine.

Re: are they put to sleep??

Hi Dannii,

It may sound like it's mean because the hcild creams but it really is not a painful thing. The child is normally screaming because they are being held down rather than from pain. Really. I have been cathed before and it is not painful at all. It's not fun to have someone standing between your legs doing it, but it's not painful.

I know for a fact that Jedd screams just because he is being held down. They have used numbing cream on his arm for blood draws (he's had tons of them) and he still screams even though we KNOW  his arm has been all numbed up completely. So we have stopped numbing him. I know, sounds mean agian, bu tht numbing cream makes the veins flatten and makes him a hard stick, so we have opted to not do it anymore.

Jedd was cathed whiel he was ill in the Peds. office by the nurse. He didn't fuss too bad and he was about Ashton's age when it was done. He had an extrmely high fever (about 104F) and they were running all sorts of test to figure out what was going on. Later found out he had Roseolo.

You have to rmember also Jedd's cathing was not easy, he had maalformed urethra, so they had to "search" to find the opening since he had not been cathed before. They found it about 1/2 way down the shaft. So, we also found out his hypospadias was way worse than expected... :(

The sedation medications would not be good to do just to collect urine. It's not something you want to volunteer your child for, that's for sure. Sedating a child can also throw off any other tests that may be taken later. Also you have the recovery time to think about to. Also th erisk of the child reacting to the sedation meds and maybe needing to be intibated.......Besides I highly doubt you will find a Dr or Hospital that will sedate ahcild jsut to cath. for urine.

I said all that just to say again, relly Cathing is not painful. Most of th etime the hcild is just screaming because they are being held down. The actually act of having the catheter placed doesn't hurt at all.

When a child is ill, a urine dip is a great way to see what is going on. Fevers can become high just due to a uriniary tract infection but hte DR will never know unless a urine sample is taken.

I hope this hleps you some. I know Ashton has bee ill lately. Jessica

Re: are they put to sleep??

This truly depends on the man. My husband has had a few surgeries where he needed a catheter and none of them has been a painful experience for him.

The experience is probably a bit different for a man and a woman, but I've had catheter as well with my c-sections and they are not painful.

Re: are they put to sleep??

If that is the worst pain he's ever suffered he's been a very lucky man! Try passing a large kidney stone, that's a lot of fun for a guy to try - NOT!

Re: are they put to sleep??

I just re-read....it's NOT a needle. It a flexible tube that they place in the penis. I actually have one at home in case Jedd needs it put in his stoma for his feeding tube. They are EXTREMELY flexible almost like a sorta stiff rubber bang. The fold and bend real easy. You can't get them to stand up or stick out on their own, they will bend.

And you have to remember it's not going through the skin, it's going in the urethra.

The catheters come in waht is called French sizes. As long as they use a small one, you should barely be able to feel it. When mine was done, I coudl barely feel it, it was just weird having anurse between my legs to do it...LOL

Re: are they put to sleep??

when my son had his seizure they needed to do a urine test to find out what caused it they have these little bags they stick over the childs genitals no matter wheither they are boys or girl and it is small enough to fit inside the childs nappy and then once the sample is collected they take it off i hope this helps

Re: are they put to sleep??

Yeah, they use the bags, and this can even be done by a GP. My daughter had one at 15 month to check for a UTI. They actually gave it to us and explained how to put it on. Just a little uncomfortable for the child, and like ripping a bandaid off afterwards - use moisturiser!

You poor thing - you sure have had a lot of issues in Ashton's short 10 weeks! Hope things improve for you!

Re: are they put to sleep??

Caitlin almost had one when we had our dash to hospital (luckily she did a wee into the cup just in time) but no, she wasnt going to be put to sleep for it. She would have been awake.

Re: are they put to sleep??

Hi Dannii,

Josh had one when he was 18 months old and he was awake for it.

I don't think they put them to sleep at all because it only takes a second if the doctor knows what they are doing.
