Re: Wrapping/swaddling
I wrapped my two children up until they could wriggle out of the wrap. This worked out to be around the 6 month old stage.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

Jenna was wrapped for 7 months - until she started rolling and preferred to sleep on her tummy with her fingers in her mouth! Rocco was wrapped for 13 months (cot sheet used from 4 months), and he still loves to be snuggled and contained when he sleeps. Both were really twitchy babies who had difficulty sleeping, and needed to be wrapped to still their bodies. By the way, they both love to be cuddled and held (aged 4 1/2 and 2)!

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

My daughter hated it as an infant... we used to do a partial swaddle. All but one hand was wrapped up and she seemed okay with that for the first couple of months. We stopped swaddling once she started being able to roll over on her own. She wriggled out of it within minutes anyway, so it was kinda silly to keep doing it. I agree that they pretty much let you know when they don't want it anymore.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

After reading everyones answers i think i win. My daughter is 11 months old and is still wrapped/swaddled every sleep. She grew out of the baby wraps so we just went onto cot sheets (flat sheets not fitted). Not sure what we are going to do over summer because it is going to get warm but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

I think i wrapped Ashton up for the first 2weeks, he hated his hands being tucked in so in the end i didnt wrap him and just tucked a blanket over the bottom of him. It was stressful because he would scream that he wanted his hands out. He has slept fine not wrapped.

Iwrapped my boy in the hospital we got home and i stopped due to the fact if he was wrapped he would just scream the whole time, but now when we are out he loves to be wrapped to go to sleep he is now 17 months old, also when he gets really restless he gets wrapped to go to sleep. but he is a very happy healthy little boy, even the health nurses said when i did 1 day parenting course said as long as the sheets are tucked in tight and they dont wriggle much in there sleep they should be fine without being wrapped.

I swaddled both my kids for the first 2 months only and they have grown into two very well adjusted teenagers.

My daughter is now almost 11 months old. I wrapped her for probably a month, then she became cranky with it and prefered only her lower body wrapped. This ended after about two months. Some kids just hate the confinement.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

Miss g hated being swaddled from about 2 months. She would squirm, kick and be pretty miserable if anyone did it to her. The midwives said to me not to worry as there are many babies that don't like it. When I did stop swaddling her she was a lot happier. My doc nick named her the freedom baby lol. The more freedom the better!!!

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

heheheh Do we win the prize for having the child who was swaddled the longest??? do we....LOL

Jedd was swaddled for aobut 7.5 months....yep you read that right.

His heart defect was causing physical impaorments so he was not rolling over until aobu that age and was perfectly comfortable be be swaddled. He really liked it.

Like the others stated, I would stop wrapping when they can wriggle out of it. We really liked those store bought swaldders that had at Babies R Us. The velcro shut AND you can use them whiel the child is in a carset. they have a hole built right in for the belt buckle.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

H was only wrapped of about 2-3mths he hated being wrapped and used to always try and get his arms out.  Some mothers in my mother's group wrapped there babies until they were at least 8 mths old.  They said that there babies slept better this way.

When we didn't wrap H any more we just bought a sleeping bag and put him in that, as he always kicks the blankets off.  At 15mth we still have him in a sleeping bag.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

My son Tristan was wrapped only for a few months. At first it made him feel secure and warm, but he let me know when he had had enough by squirming out of his wrapping when having his arms free became more important to him than being all snuggled and secure.

I had wrapped  all of my babies for at least up to 3 - 4 months of age, wrappping makes them feel secure.

Re: Wrapping/swaddling

Until they were getting stressed that their hands were confined.  Then it was a light swaddle which they usually would wriggle out of anyway.  Luckily both my boys were born in winter because where I live spring, autumn and especially summer all get very hot, so I wouldn't have been able to swaddle them much for long anyway.

Try to listen to your baby's body language.  If they get all tense and stressed whenever you swaddle them, it may be time to move on, but if you find that they are still getting comforted by it (even if you have to wait a minute) then keep going with it.  I know that is all vague, but hopefully it will help you a little.
