Prunes

My 6 month old has been eating mashed prunes in her cereal to reieve her constipation. So far, it has kept her very regular for the last week or so. Is it ok to feed her prunes on a daily basis longterm?

Re: Prunes

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, MY SON WOULDNT GO UNTIL I GAVE HIM PRUNES. I SLOWLY STARTED GIVING HIM PRUNES EVERY OTHER DAY AND ADDING DIFFERENT FRUITS. HE NOW HAS FRUIT EVERY DAY BUT PRUNES ONCE A WEEK AND IS STILL REGULAR.

Re: Prunes

Hi Prunes are ok to have and are very good for you, but I wouldn't give it every day for a 6 month old, I would only give 1 every 3 days and see how that goes. I use it at work every day and for adults it's around 3 prunes so for a baby you should only give 1 to half a 1 every 2-3 days but if the child is constipated then 1 prune for up to 3 days and if nothing happens see a doctor. On your next doctors visit just ask him or ask the cemist.

Re: Prunes

it probably depends how regular,  it's probably okay if they don't  go every 1 to 2 days, otherwise they get too dependant on prunes to go.

Re: Prunes

Prune offers a slight colonic stimulation effect as well. This means they also encourage bowel movements by stimulating the colon, but they are not nearly as powerful as commercial laxatives.

Eating excessive amounts can lead to the same addiction as taking stimulant laxatives regularly; but consuming larger amounts every now and then is perfectly safe. It’s healthy to eat a smaller amount on a regular basis to keep your colon functioning a little more efficiently. As an added bonus, they are chock full of vitamins, which makes them great for the overall health of your digestive system.

Re: Prunes

Prunes certainly will do the trick for ya...LOL I wouldn't think it would be that bad to do some everyday. But IMHO if the constipation is that bad I would talk to the dr about it to see if there aren't other issues going on. Also don't give too many bananas, they will constiapte and make sure to keep the child well hydrated. That should help the bowels move correctly as well. Hydration plays a big part in keeping the GI tract moving properly.

Re: Prunes

I wouldnt think so. Your child needs a balanced diet with a variety of foods. If you give her prunes everyday then her body will start depending on them and she wont be able to naturally go to the toilet.

Cheese constipates children if they eat too much. Try some water and fruit juices as well as some fruit and fibre. These will help, but mix them about a bit. That way she will have a variety and still go to the toilet. Good luck.
