Sick bubby

My little one year old boy just recently had a bad bout of a tummy bug and was spewing and pooing alot..The doc told me too stop breastfeeding that it could be my milk upsetting him..so I stopped and sure enough he seems to be perking up.My question is, is it cruel to continue with not breastfeeding as we have been weaning him off the boob anyway?? And also what steps should I take with this in regards to bubs wellbeing and also with my milk drying out?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

Re: Sick bubby

Hi there

I think that if you are ready to wean and you were already in the process of doing so then you can keep him off the boob. It is not cruel to do it now and being 1 year old he will be getting alot of his nutrients from the solid food that he is eating. Breast milk does contain all the nourishment that bubs needs, but you can also get a replacement (cant remember what it is called) that you can mix in with his milk if you are worried about that.

As for your milk drying out. It took mine about a month (I stopped breastfeeding at 9 months) and all i did was when my boobs felt really sore, i just expressed a tiny little bit. Just enough to ease the pressure. As you know the more you pump the more you produce, so if it is only a little bit you are expressing then you wont be making too much.

Hope this helps a little xoxox

Re: Sick bubby

It really depends on when you intended to wean. You've indicated that your son is 1 year old and that you had already tried to start the weaning process. Many women wean at the 1 year mark as the child is then old enough to drink cow or soy milk and it getting most of their nutrition from soy milk.

Ask the doctor for clarification ie: "how do you know my milk is making him sick, what do you mean by that?" and your infant health nurse but by all means if you feel ready to wean your one year old, do. It is not cruel or wrong, it is a matter of what is right for you and your child. And well done for breastfeeding for a whole year, it's hard work, and not everyone is able to do it,  but it gives your little one such a great start.

Best of luck x

Unless your son has an intolerence or an allergy to the food that you're eating - the worst thing you can do is to stop breastfeeding!

Your breastmilk contains natuarl electrolytes and a myriad of esssential vitamins and minerals that your bubs needs - especially if he's off foods or has a tummy bug!

If you're in Australia please contact the ABA, or at least a lactation consulant.
