Re: milk

Everything I've heard or read says to give babies breast milk or formula until 12 months.  Solid foods are normally started at 6 months.  Cow's milk doesn't give babies enough of the nutrition they need to grow and develop before they are 12 months old.

Re: milk

Hello....l would get another doctors advise before doing this and see what  they say first. Usually when you are asked to start your child on cow milk they tell you to water it down first as it is stronger than formula or breatmilk.

My oldest son was put onto cows milk really early as the formula was not helping him in is growing, l was advise to water it down, he is now nearly 16 years old and active and a real big tall boy..... he had no side effects but every child is different.

Good luck

Re: milk

OMG ! ! ! !

Seriously, giving cows milk to a 5 month old bub is dangerous, please stop doing this as you can cause him to develop other problems either now or later on in life . . .  Also please get yourself another Dr as this one seems like a real idiot! I am wandering why on earth a doctor would recommend something so silly . .

I am also wondering what made you think that your son isn't getting enough calcuim!! . .  If your son is breastfeeding or bottle feeding then he IS getting enough calcium as both breast and formula are very high in calcium.

PLEASE stop giving your son cows milk and seek a second opinion ASAP . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: milk

I would take my doctors advice over my nurses....

I don't think he would suggest if he thought it would do more damage then halm..

I was having trouble breast feeding the first few weeks of my little boys life and kept listening to all the nurses who kept saying just keep trying he will get it eventually and no don't give formula blah blah balh feed him this way do it that way, and almost starved the poor boy... When I finally gave into the women of my family (whom had all had kids before me), I gave my son the bottle and it was amazing the difference with in minutes of him taking the first bottle... WOW did I feel bad...   But he benifited....  And that is what counted the most...

Re: milk

Hi I had to put my son on cows milk when he was 4 months old because he wouldn't take to formula and I could no longer breast feed. He is now 6 yrs old plays football and does little athletics, he hasn't had a broken bone or injury yet so i think as long as he thrives on it its ok, you could also try yoghurts and cheese slices if u didn't want to give him a heap of cows milk.  I had a couple of nurses because i moved town when my son was born and one told me if i was ever in doubt ask my gran cos she survived the depression so she would no if something was hurting my baby my , so i did and my gran laughed at me and said welcome to motherhood - follow your gut and you'll be fine. Anyway hope I helped.

Re: milk

How do you know he's not getting enough calcium?  He's definately too young for straight cows milk!

If he's on breastmilk he IS getting enough calcium.  Is he on solids yet?    Once he's on solids a good well rounded diet will ensure enough calcium.

I'd be getting a referral to a paedatric dietician or a nutritionist.

Re: milk

He is a little young for cows milk, as it does not have enough vitamins and minerals needed at that age,but there are some great formula's out there with the added calcium needed.

does he still have breast milk or formula? also you can get calcium powders at the chemist that can be added to his milk etc just ask which one would be suitable for him at that age.
