Cradle cap

My boy is 11weeks old and has 2 spots of cradle cap on teh back of his head, its yellow and flakey. Ive been told to put baby oil on it and try to sctratch it off but i dont want to hurt him or lift the skin. Does anyone know how i can get rid of it?? Also he has a dry red patch on the top of his hairline going a little onto his forehead, what could this be?? it looks red and bumpy but like dry skin, im pretty sure it irritates him cos he is always putting his hands there and he has heaps of scratch marks in that spot.

Re: Cradle cap

put butter on the craddle cap then with a soft baby brush using the side of the bristles gently lift off the craddle cap.

there is no way that baby will be hurt by this.

good luck

Re: Cradle cap

Hi Dannii,

Use olive oil on Ashton's hair. It works much better than baby oil. It doesn't hurt them at all, just makes them look greasy. I used a nit comb on Amy's hair, she had heaps all over her head and the health nurse told me to use the nit comb and Amy actually loved it.

Hope this helps

Re: Cradle cap

My son had the dry, itchy, bumpy patch--on his cheeks and chin--for quite some time. Doctor suggested Aquaphor, which healed it very well (I don't know if you have Aquaphor there?).

It kept coming back, though, and I thought maybe it came from his face rubbing against my shirt when I was holding him, as he tended to "burrow" into my chest to get comfy.  We were using a baby detergent for him, but detergent w/bleach added for us.  I suggested this to the Doctor, because my son has very sensitive skin, and he sorta looked at me like "um, no."  He figured it was some kind of baby acne/eczema that would go away eventually and we would just have to ride out.

I switched to a dye/fragrance free detergent for my and my husband's clothes, and it stopped coming back.

Re: Cradle cap

Make sure you rinse his head with fresh water (out of the tap so there is no baby bath stuff in it) before you get him out of the bath...use baby oil or olive oil but don't scratch it off - use a soft baby brush to rub it with. It will clear up but you have to make sure you are rinsing his head well with fresh water.

The redness could be dry skin so rub some sorbolene into it after his bath and once or twice more a day.

Re: Cradle cap

I used sorbolene cream and a baby brush. You brush it until it looks like it is almost too much then you stop.

You also put it on once a day after a bath. If you put the cream on long enough it will disapear

Re: Cradle cap

lay him in a bath and just massage gently with  olive oil.try not to scatch it off it will become sore,it may look horrible for a little while but it will end up going.Even Melalueca oil or teatree essential oils (only 100% stuff check with ya chemist first but i'm sure it's suittable on all skin. i use it for EVERYTHING mozzie bites, boils, acne,it's amazing stuff!!)this has healing qualities and should help with the red area as he may have a reaction with the baby oil.i cannot use baby oil on any of my kids as the skin cannot breath as there are to many unnaturals in there!good luck

Re: Cradle cap

Yeh use the oil but dont scratch it off let it do it by itself.  I just used a wet fannel on my boys head to get rid of dry skin and it worked he hardly had cradle cap at all.  Sorry not sure bout the red patch I would maybe go to the doctor bout that one it could be excema or something like that.
