Allergy issue

Does anyone know of any good remedy for easing the symptoms of a nasty allergy to fungal spores? It reacts with me a bit like severe hayfever does with most people that suffer from it, but hayfever medications don't work.

Symptoms are: sneezing, headache, slightly blocked and very runny nose, sore dry throat, swollen glands in throat, itchy tired eyes, itchy nose. Even just getting rid of one of these symptoms would be good! Panadol helps a little bit with the headache, but not much.

Re: Allergy issue

Sadly, anything like a hay-fever allergy, including a mold allergy, is very hard to treat.  It is actually better to just ease the symptoms and not take bucket loads of allergy medications.  These medications actually suppress your immune systems response to the allergens which means your body isn't given the opportunity to fend for itself.

I suffer from pollen allergies and grass allergies every time there is a new flower around as well as every season change.  For the first 3 days, I'm really quite unhappy with it all, but I have found that moderate exposure to the allergen actually makes it all better (after about 3 days) and I don't have the same allergy response again for about 12 months (when that particular plant is flowering again).

Sorry to say, I have no advice on how to ease the symptoms for you, other than keep your fluids up and your windows open (if warm enough to).

You say it is fungal spores (mold spores) that is causing the problem.  Is that because there is a mold/fungal issue in your home?  If so, did you know that the vast majority of mold/fungal issues in buildings actually start in the roof space?  Up above your head, the enviornment is perfect for mold/fungus to grow with there being minimal light and air flow.  People are always treating the mold they can see, but don't realize that the problem is actually in the roof, so their efforts are only ever going to be temporary.

If you are renting, let your landlord know there is an issue with it.  If they get cranky, just point out that if they don't do something about it, they will be in breech of lease and you can leave anytime you like, at their expense.  Also remind them that the value of their property will drop if the roof comes crashing down!!!!

Oh, and if you are taking the Panadol brand of paracetamol and finding that it isn't doing its job properly, try the coles 'you'll love it' brand.  I find they work 10 times better and are 10 times cheaper.

Re: Allergy issue

My daughter's nurse practioner suggested I use a cup of water and add in a teaspoon of salt. Then have her gargle and spit two times a day. She also suggested drinking plenty of water to keep her nasal passages and throat clear. Ibuprofin for headaches, an antiinflammatory, will help reduce swelling, and headaches. I also read that commercial spray room deodorizers add to the allergy issues, not reduce them. If you use these, try adding a few cinnamon sticks in a pot of boiling water you then simmer. I hope this helps!

And yes, this is parenting related, because I'm a parent and it's not easy to try to get a baby to feed quietly and go to sleep when I'm sneezing and diving for the tissues every other minute!
