Re: Constipation from cows milk
Hi Grendal
How old is your daughter? How long has she been constipated and does she seem like it is bothering her? When my son was born a mid wife at a care centre in Sydney told me the record for not pooing was 28 days and held by a baby at Collaroy Plateau! Perhaps if she is less that a year you should take her off the cows' milk and try a different formula for older babies? There are so many around these days, but you might need to experiment to find one that works for her.
I see you are in Australia so find a soul chemist and ask for a natural remedy they have made by Harles. It's ALL natural and used to be an "all in one" teething and colic mixture but a baby ehalth nurse told me it's a great laxative. My son was only 6 weeks old and didn't poo for about 11 days and he was in agony - tummy tight like a drum, couldn't settle (naturally!). I gave him a dose of the stuff and within about 1 hour it all cam thundering through. LOL he was so relieved that he slept right through while I cleaned him up!!
When I had my second child it had been changed into two separate mixtures - Teething mixture and a colic Mixture so I still used it but combined a little of each when needed. It seems to work for constipation, teething, wind,a nd just as a calmative when the work themselves into a frenzy and can settle - much more effective than baby panadol (half the amount seemed to settle mine for twice as long as panadol). It contains peppermint oil, dogwood and some other things, but not chemicals last time I checked.
I don't know if the same belief is held 10 years later - but when I asked my doctor and peadiatrician about putting my second baby on soy formula they both advised against it as it can sometimes cause allergies. Apparently it is only recommended when allother avenues have been exhausted and there is a possible lactose intolerance present.
Hope you sort it out quickly! Sharon
