Re: Sprined wrist from carrying baby

I have had an intermittent problem with my wrist and when it flares up, I use a kind of elastic sleeve/support which just pulls on over the hand and snugs the joint with a firm support.  Its about 10cm long, only cost about $10-15 (Aust) from the chemist (but that was about 15 years ago) and you can put it in the washing machine (probably not on hot cycle).  I found it better than a bandage as it doesn't need to be fastened so its safer- no safety pins or clips to catch on bub or anything else, and really quick and convenient to use.  The comfort I feel when I pull it on is immediate!  Good luck! and if bandaging/support doesn't help maybe you should consider if this is actually a sprain or something else?

sounds like de quervain's tenosynovitis which is a repetitive strain injury, it's commonly called washer womans injury or new mothers injury, i've actually got it myself, mine got to the point where it needed a steroid injection and might possibly need another one, it can take up to a year to really heal fully, you should stay away from using the wrist too much ideally, but with kids it's absolutely impossible, just try to wear a wrist support of splint and keep the area warm and possibly try an antiinflammitry cream like voltaren.

Re: Sprined wrist from carrying baby

It sounds a bit like tendonitis/tenosynovitis/RSI (repetitive strain injury). I've had it for years, but I guess with all that lifting and carrying you'd be especially vulnerable at the moment.

Go to see your doctor.

In the meantime, think of the ways you're carrying baby and try to use the other hand. Be careful when you're online about your posture and take lots of short rests if you're typing, or get very good at one-handed typing. And rest baby's head on a cushion when feeding rather than holding in your hand - easily sets mine off.

When tendons are strained it takes about 6 weeks to get back to strength and if you do it repeatedly it will take far longer and you may develop RSI as I did. If the pain is getting to you (aching/shooting pains when lifting/rotating) then ibuprofen may help. The consultant gave me a wrist splint but I was always breaking it doing gardening so my brother gave me his old skate boarding wrist splint instead - much more robust! In the end I had ultrasound and my arm encased in plaster, but good old fashioned rest sorted it for me in the end - not something you can do easily right now. At worst, they can inject the trendon or operate, but I'm sure you're not there yet.

Hope that helps.

Re: Sprined wrist from carrying baby

I havent sprained my wrist before, but after Krue was born (9lb 1oz) the first 3 weeks or so I was getting a limp wrist and splintering pains. After he was able to hold himself up abit better I just readjusted the way I was carrying him and holding him and it stopped happening.
