Re: stop breast feeding

hi i know that every child is different i breastfeed my daughter till she was 17 months i stoped because of returning to work i dont know if this will work for you but it did for me ,dont stop breastfeeding all together start by going out for a few hours and leave your child with your partner/someone you and the child trusts get them to give your child the bottle it might take some time keep in mind the more often you do this the more likly the child will take the bottle, if you try the child can smell your milk on you so he/she wont take the bottle it gets easyer as your milk drys up if a bottle wont work try a sippy cup make them feel likje a big boy/girl they love it

Re: stop breast feeding

At that age there is no need to replace BF with anything else(as far as diet just offer a wide range of healthy foods and 3 serves of dairy). Instead it is just a case of stopping the feed-this is best done over a long period rather then a week or so. Here's some things that might help:-

*pick the hardest feed to let go (overnight, first thing in the morning etc) and do that one first. Then the next hardest.     * During the day try offering favourite foods or drinks as a form of distraction * Go out or to places where feeding happens less often * If a feed usually happens while you're still in bed in the morning then make an effort to wake up before him and get dressed (remove the temptation LOL) * You can build him up to weaning by pointing out the 'big boys' who are weaned etc * If feeding to sleep then implement a bedtime routine that removes the feed * If there are long feeds then start cutting them shorter until they are gone *Wear different clothes that are harder to access *Distraction works really well-when he asks for a feed then offer a game or toyu or something novel to do instead * try to stay calm through the process-reluctant weaners can sense tension in the mother and often want more feeds making mum more anxious.

also keep an eye on yourself. Ensure you aren't getting any blockages etc. the slower the weaning process the easier on everyone.A lot of mums work out how many feeds their LO has and then drop one every couple of weeks until weaning is complete.

Hope this helps

Re: stop breast feeding

I stopped bf my boy at 19months as well. I started by cutting out all day feeds and just giving one at night, then stopped that as well. I was surprised how quickly he adjusted and he wasn't upset for very long at all as long as i distracted him whenever he asked for a feed. It wasn't long before he stopped asking.

He never liked bottles so we went straight to a cup. He did not like to drink milk at all at first so his only calcium source was cheese or milk in his breakfast cereal for a while, but after a few months he started to like milk and now asks for it regularly.

Good luck

Re: stop breast feeding

Go to a cup.... Does he drink water from a cup??? if so use the same sort but put breast milk first and then cows milk...It shouldn't take long and just praise him as being a big boy...

Also going with the advice of getting someone else to feed him or introduce the cup to him is a great idea...If he smells the breast you have no hope...

Good Luck

Re: stop breast feeding

Hi and good on you for going so long. I went 13mths with my daughter before I weaned her ( I was pregs and she was sooo agro on the boob ). I by-passed bottles and went straight to the cup. She was already having cow's milk in all her food, so I put some breastmilk in a cup and she drank from that and over a wk I introduced cows milk as her drinking milk.

  Hope it helps.

Re: stop breast feeding

My son was the same, wasnt until i brought Nuk teats and  let him feed himself that he was fine..

I also allowed my partner or family feed him  as well, and made sure he couldnt see me in the room .

Here is spme  links on what Nuk teats are...

Re: stop breast feeding

Hi, well done for lasting so long.  I finally got sock of feeding and my little one hated bottles too.  Eventually we got there, I cut a hole in the top a teat so the the cow's milk or formula flowed out really easy. I think they get a better supply from the breast than from a bottle teat, and they get fustrated.

He had the bottle for a couple of months then I just put him on to a sippy cup.  Never looked back.  Good luck
