A yucky Question

Hi,

My daughter is 1 tomorrow and i have just started (today) mixing her formula with cows milk. Since her first bottle this morning she has had 2 disgusting nappies. Her poo is really running and it stinks. Is this normal? Do i need to stop the cows milk? SHe is having 100mls of formula and 100mls of cow milk mixed together (only 2 bottle so far today)

Thank You in advance

Juzzy

Re: A yucky Question

two things, one dont mix formula and cows milk in  the same bottle not a good idea. dilute cows milk with water.. 50 /50. what formula are you using? if the formula is a cows milk base it isnt likely to be a reaction to the cows milk but rather that the two are being mixed together. However if you are using a formula that isnt a cows milk base then likely that your child is having a reaction to the protein in cows milk and not the lactose unless you are currenlty using a lactose free formula.. good luck takes a bit of trail and error had some issues when changed levi to cows milk as well good luck.

Re: A yucky Question

I am lactose intolorent... and it only affects me one way... Just like your daughter!  Try to cut back teh ammount... maybe only a quarter cow milk adn 3/4 formula.   Is her formula Milk Based? if it is, then it is prob just the sudden change in food and it will continue for a few days adn then it will be ok,  if she is not used to any milk based things... like yogurt or a bit of block cheese... then start her off very slowly so seh can build up a tollerance... give her just a little for about a week, then give her a bit more for another week,  Dont mover to fast with it tho,  give her time to adjust to the new diet!

Re: A yucky Question

Our mobile nappy clad monsters (care to disagree?  I'll send them to anyone who does for a week!!! lol) often have really disgusting nappies.  For them, it is usually when they manage to sneak a drink of bath water in (they work as a team for this!!!) or when they have a cold/flu bug.

Lactose intolerance which is the allergy usually associated with milk and dairy products, usually affects both ends, not just the bottom.  My sister had it as a baby, and we had to have a bucket for both ends, like 5 feet away! lol.

When introducing cow's milk, I recommend taking it even slower.  Make it only 1/4 cow's milk for the first couple of weeks, gradually increasing the amount by 25% (another 1/4) every 2 weeks.  See how that goes.

A babies digestive system has to get used to any new foods, so a gradual introduction is a good idea.  I believe that until our bodies get used to anything (not just food) we are allergic to it.  Once our bodies build an immunity to it, then we are able to eat it without a problem.  The older we get, the quicker our bodies adapt to new foods.

And happy birthday to the littleprincess for tomorrow.

Re: A yucky Question

I only mixed hot water with formula, it may be better to stop the cow's milk (at least for a while) and see if the poo situation corrects itself, then at least you will be able to see if it was the cow's milk that caused the problem.

All the best

Re: A yucky Question

I have never mixed formula with anything other than boiled water, it is possible it is too strong for her.  I know a lot of parents who have had to try various formulas to find the right one for their babies.  I had the opposite problem s26 constipated baby :(  If you child eats a well balanced diet cows milk is fine with just one formula at night to make sure she is recieving her RDI of vitamins minerals and fibre. Good Luck!

Re: A yucky Question

Hi Juzzy,

Please STOP the cows milk as what you are describing is a reaction that happens when an allergy to cows milk is apparent . . . .

My youngest has this very same allergy so I understand just all about your little ones poohs being runny and the stink is really out of this world isn't it . . .

PLEASE stop the cows milk and go back to using just formula . . I may be able to offer you more advice here but will need to know a few things like what formala you have been using, how have her poohs been up until now and did she ever have any type of reflux . .

Please Minti mail me and I will  do all that I can to help . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: A yucky Question

hi, i dont know about mixing formula and cows milk because i never did it i was told not to but thats not to say that you shouldnt. with my 2 little ones i just gave them half water half milk bottles that way they arent getting the full effects of the milk and slowly decreased the amount of water so that their little bellys and digestive systems could adjust. a bit of the runs is normal or she could be lactose intolerant. you dont know until you try. you've got to remamber that this is a new thing in her diet so it may take a bit of time to adjust.  hope this helps

xoxox good luck with tomorrow and wish ur little girl a happy birthday

Re: A yucky Question

i have never heard of mixing them both together but for most babies cows milk is too much for there little bellies  because it is so rich so i used to mix half milk and half water for my son and kept  the formula for his night bottle my daughter on the other hand the milk went straight through her so i had to keep her on formula till she was 14 months and at nap time give her only 60mls of milk and top the rest of the bottle up with water  and i did that for a while then i made her morning bottle the same  and eventually she didnt have the formula anymore .if your worried about the vitamins side of things that the formula has that cows milk dosent my little boy loved that toddler milk the only thing i found is i had to make it up in a milkshake shaker first then put it in the bottle . i hope some of that made sense and was useful good luck
