Whoever told you babies don't need milk is wrong - unless they have a definite calcium intkae from other sources. Between 7 and 12 months of age require 600 milligrams (mg.) of calcium each day. A good way to assist calcium absorbtion is to have vitamin c close to the calcium food or milk intake - apparently calcium helps them take it in faster and retain more of it.
If your bub is not having calcium you won't see the down side for quite a while but his bones won't be as strong and he will be more at risk from fratcures as he grows up. Google babies and calcium on the internet or speak to a baby health care professonal about it.
