6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

My son is about to turn six and we are struggling to think of a good birthday present for him. Can anyone recommend something for an active but not sporty 6 year old boy?

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

For those who are interested, I bought Michael's birthday present yesterday. I took my Mum & Dad because they didn't know what to get either. We ended up buying these interactive educational toys from Toys R Us, where they were on special. I considered the Imaginext patrol boat (or whatever it was) because Michael had liked it when he saw it, but I thought he may lose interest like he has with other similar toys. And the Imaginext range is very limited in Australia.

So my folks bought a dinosaur machine and I bought a space/solar system one. He's really interested in both of those, and he found the same kind of toy (more or less an atlas) really interesting. We reasoned that the ones we bought won't be out of date in a hurry, whereas world borders, governments, populations, etc, change all the time.

If you like, I'll come back and let you know if he likes them as much as I hope.

Sounds like fun. I'm sure he will love it all. He is a little space-man lol

I hope so. I'd hate to have him disappointed. He's too young to have crummy birthdays!

Thank you to everyone who's given me ideas for my son's birthday present. I think I'll go with the idea of Imaginext, because I think I'd like to play with it too!

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

Honestly, I think your little guy will love it!  I told my son (now 14) that I had recommended it to you for a 6yo and he said "Man, that lucky kid - he will be so happy.  I wish I had more".  And yep, I have spent many hours putting castles together and having play pirate and soldier fights - it's really fun!  But I'm just a big kid though LOL

We also tried the good old meccano when our son was about 7-8 but he found it really difficult (has over flexible tendons in his hands) doing small screws up tight enough to hold things together properly.  I don't even know what happened to the 3 meccano sets we gave him as they were pretty quickly relegated to the cupboard and I don't recall seeing them when we moved last year.

Let me know what he thinks of it!  sharon

He's definitely into castles and pirates and so on. And he's outgrown his Little People farm, so this would be a nice replacement!

We have quite a lot of Meccano - old metal stuff that used to be hubby's! He and Michael used it once and hubby had to do it all. Much too hard for a little fella - and the metal stuff is a bit sharp too.

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

I've seen it in catalogues, but I'll have to go to Toys R Us (and Target, K-Mart, and Big W) on Monday and see what they've got. Don't want the little man to know what he's getting until the big day! Might see if my folks want to come along - they might get something that matches in.

In the meantime, I'm going to have a look to see if there's a website to give me a better idea.

Argh! I found the website and got all excited by how brilliant the toys are, and how cheap the prices seemed to be. Then hubby pointed out that it was the US website. So I found the Australian one and of course the prices were double - and worst of all, the castle wasn't shown at all and neither was the pirate ship!

Have yoiu tried ebay? You can pick up some great bargains on stuff like that. I have bought lego on there before. Even though it's second hand it's not that much differnt to buying it new because of tthe quality. I don't know about you but my kids dont mind a bit that it's not brand new.

I hope he has a great birthday and we would love to see some pics too!!

Hi Abs - hey, unfortunately with the desperate drought in Australia slip and slides (whilst a great idea and lots of fun) are not a good idea.  In most states you are not supposed to use them.  It's a shame for our kids too  - I had a couple of these over my growing up years and they were heaps of fun (especially when we added soap!).

Lucky for our town we recieved a huge down pour of rain a couple of months ago and our massive dam had gotten fill up (fingerscross it will stay up) . so we are allowed to wash our cars (bugger). lol

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

Well, you may think this is a bit much for a 6 year old boy but, here is my idea.

I have two kids, a 7 year old and a 5 year old.  Both my kids are very active and do to me fighting cancer I am unable to put them in all the sports and things they would like to be in.  Anyways, we got our kids the new Wii game, its interactive and they can act out the sports right there in your living room.  they have racing games, fighting, sports, bowling and so much more, my kids have hours of fun on it and its fun for me to lay back and watch them do it.  This may also be a good way to try and get him into sports!!!!!!!

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

I highly recommend Imaginext!  My son discovered it at age 8-9 which we thought was a bit old to start with it as it is something you just keep adding to.  BUT he has had years of pleasure out of it and it is of such good quality that he has decided it is one of the things he wants to save for his own kids one day.  He's now 14 and if it wasn't packed up and left in storage at his grandmothers' place in Sydney he would still be playing with it.  If your son like Kinnex, Lego and Bionicles + pirates, castles and that sort of thing then go and check it out.  Like I said, it's superb quality - but it is not cheap and will last for years.  At this age you can add sets for the next few years of Christmases and birthdays.

Ebay is a good place to pick up this sort of thing at a more affordable price. Second hand but like you say it's good quality and lasts for years.

My favourite thing is the vortex. If you dont know what it is It's a throwing toy, shaped like a torpedo and it whistles in the air. They are under $10, you get them from toyworld and they are greeat fun. i don't beleive a gift has to be flashy or expensive to be good.

Needs 2 people to play though. Just throw it to each other and catch.

Re: 6-year-old boy birthday gift ideas

Hi,

How about some Lego so that when it is finished, your son can keep it in his bedroom & maybe start a collection.  Does he like fiddleing with nails, screws etc. because if he does, you could make up a small too-kit for him.

Or you could take him to the zoo/theme park etc with one of his close friends.  Let us know what you decide.

Krys.

Lego is a great one. My 6 year old loves it.

My son says to get:

remote control cars or vehicles, x-men, star wars stuff. I think he is going to name like everything in the new toys r us booklet. LOL

It really depends on what he is into. We love manga and anime so my kids love that sorta thing.
