Re: reading to child

You have been given some excellent advice here....it is never to early to start reading to your child. Books are a stepping stone to knowledge....bonding and quality time spent with your baby.

Re: reading to child

i started reading to my son when he was 2 weeks old. not that he really understood me. but it helped him sleep or calm down.

i have disney books to read to him which he loves as the pics are big and colourful.  my son loves the books that make noise or you can feel.

reading to them helps them concetrate and hearing your voice builds your bond.  dont worry to much into wat book u read as long as u read it to him and even change your voice when reading

Re: reading to child

Read Read Read.....As Much as you like...The more you read the more you and your son will enjoy precious moments together...Reading is good to calm a child and yourself...IT is good for the children to see the pictures and associate words with them...

Books with bright pictures are a good start...Remember not too long as they dont have the attention span to start with just short picture books that they can then enjoy playing with, chewing on...I found bath books were a great start and then move on to board books and as a special treat use the books you had chosen (Dr Suess etc) to read with him say at bedtime...

You are doing a wonderful thing and the more you read the better their vocabulary and schooling is...

Cheers Spinnychic

Re: reading to child

Its never to early and reading to a child in a calm, slow  voice just before bedtime can help establish a good night time bed pattern.

BTW he LOVES LOVES books now as a 2 year old. He will sit down any time of th eday no matter what he is doing and "read" with you. He loves it to death.

Re: reading to child

My 14mth old daughter was given her first book last Xmas when she was 3mths old.   It was a vinyl Playgro book which didn't have any words just pictures (ie. ducks/frogs/dragonflys/fish etc).  We started out gradually turning the pages & saying what the pictures were; making the appropriate noises of the animals.   To say it was one of her most loved Xmas present would be an understatement!  We have since bought her other books (ie. The Night Garden series).   Sometimes she allows us to read the story but other times she just delights in turning the pages & pointing at the pictures with excitement!   Each child is an individual!   Make learning fun!   Hope this helps in some way!   GOOD LUCK!

Re: reading to child

I have a CAYHS nurse visit my house fortnightly, and she has told me to start reading to my son as early as 1 month old.
You should hold him in a position on your body where he can see the book and make sure its one with bright bold pictures.

Just because he cant understand what your saying doesnt mean its not sinking in, and he will soon associate having a book read to him as a good thing and enjoy books when his older. Its also said to have been proven that reading to them from that young can help them develop their motor skills faster than children who arent read to as infants.

Re: reading to child

Hi; I just looked at your profile and noticed your son is 1 week old. Personally I wouldnt think it would be a bad idea to start reading to him now.

As I said, hold him in a position where his being snuggled and can see the book at the same time, and he should be fine.

Good luck in getting him to enjoy books and reading :)
