Toilet training

My partner and are having a disagreement on when to toilet train our 16mth old boy.  He thinks we should start now, and I think later, like when he can talk to us and tell us he has done wees and poos.

When is the correct age? and is 16mths too young to toilet train?

Re: Toilet training

Hi there, our little boy is 4 now and we did start at about 18months and it was a nightmare he just would not go and we finally managed to get him fully trained just after he turned 3.  I think if you choose to start now as long as your consistant you ll eventually get results I think the key is Dont Give Up :) and the more you partner can help the better our little boy responded so much better to his dad then to me.  GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: Toilet training

Hi,

You cannot toilet train a child that is not ready. If your child is showing signs of being interested then you can give it a try but if they have no idea what is going on then you will just be wasting your time.

Hope this helps

Re: Toilet training

when i found out that i was pregnant again my eldest was 7 months. by 9 months she was walking and i got her a little potty that stayed in the bathroom. she would sit on it in her nappy when ever hubby or i went to the loo, and she started wanting to take her nappy off. after around a month she would take herself off to the potty at random times and not do anything in it, or she would start crying because she didnt make it. we found it alot easier using the potty, as they can go while your using the 'big people' toilet. by the time my second child was born she was fully day trained (yes, by 1.5 years!) we had a laid back approach to it, she never got introuble for not doing it, or for mistakes (which she does still have every now and again) we just get her to help clean it up.

good luck, i hope this helps. i know it can seem like a MASSIVE thing, take it slowly, i hope it is warm where you are when you decide, you'll probably have quite a bit of washing. happy training!

Re: Toilet training

16 months is NOT too young to potty train!  as long as they are willing to sit on teh potty then they can learn. and as for them telling you its time to potty, then that will come as soon as they get the hang of it, or if you want you can just have his potty in easy access for him so he dont even have to tell you he has to go and he can just do it!  but then you have the prob of being in public .  well Good luck with it,

Re: Toilet training

I am a strong believer of letting the chld tll you when they are ready. my kids were 3 hen they were day trained and my 6 year old is now night time trained and my 4 year old still has wet bed at nights.

My kids as soon as they walked saw me or hubby on the loo, I always had the potty and a step and a seat for them on their toilet.

I also believe that if you push a child to toilet train they will not do it and later have problems in life. Some children are scared of the toilet (it is a huge thing to them that has water in it and flushes)

I would just talk to your child (which I am sure you do) and when they wee or poo talk tot hem about it and say where do we go when we need to go wee's or poo's etc. they soon learn
