Terrible Headaches

Hi everyone,

I am turning 40 in a couple of months, and just over the last 12 months or so I have been getting really bad headaches just before my period every month. I have always been a headache sufferer, but these are much worse and last for days!! I take Nurofen Plus and they work for about half an hour then the pain comes back. I have been given some stronger medication but that just puts me to sleep. I struggle to get through the day when the pain is bad - does anyone have any suggestions?

Karen

Re: Terrible Headaches

Hi there,

It could be many things causing your headaches, but it is best to get it checked out thoroughly! It could be changing hormonal levels. It could be that your neck or spine is out of allignment and hormonal changes each month aggravate this.Sometimes hormanal changes cause stress- it can cause you to be clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth in your sleep - this can cause awful headaches  But you should make sure that you have an MRI or  CT scan, or both, done of your head and neck to identify or rule out many problems. Please keep onto your doctor to follow up on this.Best wishes and hopefully you can find some relief soon! Constant pain is very exhausting.

Re: Terrible Headaches

Absolutely heed the advice given here and get different opinions - even TELL your or any other doctor you want an MRI and a CT scan (they both show different things).

I would also suggest comprehensive eye tests as headaches related to deteriorating vision can be horrendous.

Additionally, I read somewhere recently that migranes (which is waht you sound like you are having) can be related to heart problems - studies have shown a link between migrane sufferers and heart problems.  BUT they are not major life threatening problems and can be fixed with a simple operation on one of the heart valves or ventricles.

The important thing is to NOT rely on one doctors' advice but to get other opinions.  doctors are marvelous, but they are human and just as fallible as the rest of us!

Re: Terrible Headaches

Go and get a second, third, fourth opinion! My cousin had headaches for nearly 12 months and she knew it was more then just stress (doc's diagnosis), she had cysts on her brain! She got headaches everyday and it wasnt until they did a mri scan that they found it, they caught it early and she is fine now but I would go and get it checked asap. Hope all is well and nothing major. Good Luck.

Re: Terrible Headaches

Try getting a s cript for anti inflammatory pain relief rather than paracetamol or panadiene, generally I find they they have no drowsy side effects, i find they give less hangover, are easier on the stomache, and kidneys and liver function! Keeping in mind everyone is different, the best  brand i am scripted with is called Brufen 400mg. Good luck with the headaches.

Re: Terrible Headaches

Personally I would be going back to your Doctor and forcing the issue asap. Has the Doc done blood tests to rule out thyroid, hormonal changes, iron etc.

If it is soley down to Migraine like headaches, then in my and my friends experiences this is not uncommon when entering ones 40s, but other issues need to be ruled out.

My Headaches were confirmed as "Hormonal Migraine" and was put on Beta Blockers for a set period, then blood tests taken every month. Once the hormones were shown to be settled, I was taken off the Beta Blockers slowly. It worked,LOL, not one painful head ache in over a year. My friends like wise.

Please go back to the Docs.

Luv Winnie.
