hospital stays

I have recently found out I am expecting again, this will be my second child.
I was wondering how long you generally stay in hospital for after giving birth on a second child?

Im mainly asking because this was an unplanned pregnancy which has resulted in my EDD being 2 days before my sons 1st Birthday and thats a birthday I would regret missing.

Re: hospital stays

ok..personally i think its up to you on how long you stay in hospital after having a baby..if you think your'e gana have complications then its best to stay but if you think you're alright then you should be good to go..

unless something goes wrong during labour and you HAVE to stay ..den yeh its totally up 2 u..

Re: hospital stays

If you have a natural birth with no compliactions and because you are bottle feeding id say 1 night tops.

I had my first baby 4 months ago, i had a horrible birth resukting in vac extraction and a large episiotomy. My son was also in specia care for 9 hrs but they were still going to let me go home after under 2days.

As long as bubs is healthy, your feeling well and bubs is feeding well then there shudnt be any problems with you going home after 6 hrs.

Also having an episiotomy the first time doesnt mean it will happen again, perenial massge will help you, also second births should be a little easier i guess.

Re: hospital stays

Hey I think it all depends on how your labour goes and good you feel.  I had a few of my babies in the early hours of the morning and been home before lunch.  But if you do  choose to go home pretty much straight away make sure that you have lots of support so you can still get plenty of rest.. Good luck

Re: hospital stays

The other thing Is my breast milk dries up really fast and I will be planning on bottle feeding from the start, so establishing feeding shouldnt be a problem.

Does anyone know if there is a chance of en episiotomy scar ripping open when there is only a years gap?

Re: hospital stays

hi

it all depends on how your delivery goes really. I had my second at 7.01 and was allowed home at 12 noon so this was a mere few hours but everything went ok with me. In the Uk they relaise that some mums feel uncomfortable in the hospital and studies have shown that people recover better in their own environment.

So whatever happens hunny, try not to worry. I am sure your child will be more than happy to see his little sibling as that could well be the best prezzy ever!

Delivery dates can be hard to pin point, my youngest was born 10 days lates and my son was a few days late too. Have a chat to your child and explain things as simply as possible, get them all excited for the big day and if it ends up being on their birthday then bring the party to the hospital and then celebrate even more with them when you come home.

My eldests birthday was near my due date and I was panicking like mad and now there is 5 days between them.

I wish you well.xx

Re: hospital stays

1st off, let me just say congrats on your 2nd pregnancy!

I fell pregnant pretty much straight away after my 3rd bub, wasnt planned as well but a blessing none the less. Baby no:4 was due on the 11th and he came on the 3rd... 2 days before baby no:3 1st bday!!! On top of that, I am still breastfeeding baby no:3!!! I was only in hospital for the 1 night, had no complications so was allowed home when I was ready and the midwife came to our place to check on bub. As long as you are both fine, then you can pretty much leave as soon as the child doc has seen your bub.

Hope it works out for you and good luck!

Re: hospital stays

I already read the answers, but I think firstly it depends on how the birth goes, and secondly what services your hospital/community has in place. I have been told I can leave the hospital anywhere from 4 hours after the birth with my 2nd boy if there is no complications, as I am low risk for everything I will be clear and as my 1st boy was happy and healthy the 2nd one will probably be as well. But as I said at the start it depends on what programs ure hospital/community have.

Re: hospital stays

Congrats

Ive been told you can get early discharge if all goes well with vag birth and baby is feeding good after 4 to 6 hours and it also depends on how far you live from the hospital, My first born 14years ago i was only in for 3 days and let home as all was well and my three girls 12, 11, 7 we were all home within 12 hrs of birth as we were only 26km from the hospital. This time I can come home earlier as we are only 3km from the hospital and the midwife will call in and do a few checks with me and bub as we are so close.

I would ask your midwife or Dr what services they have in place like I have.

Re: hospital stays

Don't stress on it - take it as it comes, as you never know what's going to happen, and you don't want to rush home! My two were 16 days and 6 days over respectively, both with lower than average heart rates and fetal distress. Both kids were fine, thank goodness. I was pretty banged up after number one, and had 5 days in hospital. Number 2 was quick and easy, and I was home in 30 hours. wouldn't have done it any other way, but I did have to get through the first 10 days with number two by taking panadeine forte regularly to keep the episiotomy pain at bay.

Re: hospital stays

My last baby was due 7 days after my daughters bday and i was so upset.. for a few reasons, firstly i didnt wanna miss it and second i didnt want her bday to be overrun by his birth..

lucky he came late and put a two week gap in between birthdays

u have to stay a min 6 hours i think if all is well but i would recommend staying over night to give ur self the chanch to establisg feeding and have rest.

xoxo

Re: hospital stays

With Krue, he was 7 days late, I had to be induced and I had an episiotomy because his heart beat stopped. I had to stay for 4 days after his birth.

Re: hospital stays

You could stay home? If you do have bub on edd you could get early discharge if all goes well.

Re: hospital stays

congratulations.

dont worry too much about your EDD. only around 5% of babies are born on the day that they are due.  2nd and subsequent babies usually come a bit earlier anyway.

hospital stays are usually 2-3 days for a non complicated vag birth (but you could be discharged after a few hours if all is well, but i would recommend taking advantage of the rest time in hospital- no cooking or cleaning or running around after a 2yo can make all the difference to your recovery.  i say this from experience).  usually 4-5 days for a c-sec.

Re: hospital stays

Firstly an estimated due date is just only an estimate. Did you have your son on his due date? if you went over with him you're more likely to go over again.

Talk to your doctor or midwife closer to being due and ask them if they feel you'll go over or not. Most hospitals will allow you to go home the next day if all is okay with you and bub.

Re: hospital stays

Congratulations! I was home 6 hours after having my 2nd child, it was my birthday & I was not spending it hospital! The minimum is 4 hours in aus if you have  a straight forward birth. I couldnt leave then because my doctor was in surgery. Good luck!!
