Adenoids

My son ended up in hospital with breathing problems when he was one. He was thought to have bronchiolitis, but was found not too. He was treated for asthma with medications, he was also on oxygen for several days. He has had a few asthma episodes. When he sleeps he tosses and turns , snuffles, seems sometimes to breath irregularly and snores. I took him to an ear nose throat specialist, he looked at him and said he would take his adenoids out, his tonsils are also a little big. He said if he still has the problem a year later he will take out his tonsils as well. I was unsure weather to go ahead, he is only 2 1/2. The same doctor took out my partners adnoids last year, so my partners not too keen for my son to have it done, he still has sinus problems and still snores. Id like advice, should we get it done it seems drastic for his age. Especially  if anyone has had similar problems.

Re: Adenoids

Hi sorry to hear you are having problems with your little boys health,  we had similar problems with our little girl who is now 5.  Her breathing was terrible especially when she slept to the point where she would actually stop breathing for a short time, she also had hearing difficulties because it affected her ears as well.  This was all due to her having issues with her adenoids and her tonsils were ridiculously large as well we put her surgery off for other reasons and finally had it done a few months ago and although I m suggesting you put your little boy through it, because at the end of the day it is still an op. She is fantastic now, she no longer snores or snuffles in her sleep she can hear really well, she can smell properly and she bounced back remarkably well from the surgery.  And I have heard from other adults who have had it done that it is apparently worse when you are older to have the surgery.  If you really want other alternatives maybe research natural things you can try to see if that helps.. GOOD LUCK

Re: Adenoids

My nephew had his adenoids out at 3 (his 5yo sister told everyone he'd had his asteroids out lol)  and yes what a dramatic improvement.  No snoring, no earaches, no throat infections, and a good nights sleep which made him much happier during the day.

Re: Adenoids

Hi there froglet.

My son had his tonsils adenoids and grommets inserted when he was only 2.5.

It was the best thing that we ever did.

I thought that he was just ignorant (being a boy and all) and after  having the operation it certinaly made a huge difference.

Obviously it is a personal preference as to get the operation done or not, but in my opinion, GO FOR IT.

ONE LAST THING THOUGH..... Beware the stinky breath afterwards.

Re: Adenoids

My son had his adenoids out.  WHAT A RELEIF!  He had chronic ear infections and his ears could not drain because his adenoids were inlarged, when he was about a 4 months old they had him on a nebulizer, with albuterol (sp) and pulmicort.   It did not seem to help. His ear drum ruptured when he was just over a year, so when we went to see an ENT he said he thought it was his adenoids, after a few months of trying other alternatives we went ahead with the surgery and now he is fine. My daughter then had her tonsils and adenoids out because she couldnt breath through her nose at all, she kept her mouth open all the time, and would sleep with her head propped up in her hands with her elbows on the bed.  Her tonsils were inlarged also, we were told this is hereditary.  As to the pain after Cole did much better than Cheyenne.  It took her about a week to feel better, Cole was feeling great the next day. I think it helps when they are younger.  Good luck!!!

Re: Adenoids

my hubby was 18 months old when he had his adinoids out. he also has astma and snore BUT his snoring has only gotten bad since he stacked on 30kg. he was 100kg when we got married (he was slim but he is a large build) and now he wavers between 120-130kg (depends on his add meds and what is happening with me, he eats when he is depressed)

I was 9 i think, year 3 or 4 i had my tonsils and adinoids out as i had tonsilitis alot in that year. i would be on the anti biotics then it was gone and a week or so later back again. I snore but i again am 90kg, when i was 64kg i didnt snore and i also have very mild astma where hubby has it a bit more where he needs the prevetitive and ventaline (sp)

in the end it is 100% ur choice, the way i would look at it is. is he going to get tonsilitis a lot, does he or is he a candidit for sleep apnia (my cousin no longer has that since she had hers out and she was 6) will this help the snoring? just cause hubby has probs doesnt mean he will, i dont, my hubby doesnt and my cousin doesnt where my dad and aunty do. will this aide his astma?

Also there are many reasons for snoring, adinoids are not always the problem. sleep apnia is a cause as well. my dad has that really bad and needs the machine (but he wont use it and lacks sleep and is depressed)

I personally would do it, but thats me. i know i am a heap better since i had mine done. my hubby could hear after he had his out.

good luck.

Re: Adenoids

my nephew had very bad snoring problems and few times ended in hospital as he has stoped breathing while asleep.  last year he was diagnosed with very large tonsils; also he had to have his adenoids taken out.  he had many ear infections too, which for some reason have linked it back to all the above.

he had his operations done last year september, and bounced back quickly.  since then he has very settled sleep and behaviour also improved as he gets much better rest at night.

if it would be my child i would have the procedure done, as i have definitely seen the positives in my nephew's life

all the best

Re: Adenoids

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when i was 3. I too had asthma and would go on the nebuliser before bed to open my airways. When i was 6 months old doctors diagnosed me with sleep apnea. I also kept getting tonsil infections. So it was planned that when i turned 3 i would ahve the surgery.

The surgery doesnt take long and my mum said i just had a sore throat for awhile.

Personally, I think you should get the surgery done. Do it while his young and the problem will fix better. Ive never had a problem sinc ei had it done although i still had mild asthma for a few more years.

Talk to your paed about your concerns and what your worried about. I know the surgery didnt go well for your husband but it might take better affect on you rson as his still younga nd the problem isnt too bad.

Good luck.
