Burping help

I'm having a bit of a problem. My son really and I mean... REALLY... enjoys his food. He gets a little too excited sometimes lol The problem is now that he is 10 weeks old he has become quite big for his age (he was born 7 weeks premature but due to my diabetes was born almost 7 pounds!!). He is in the 75th percentile.. meaning if he were in a room with 100 other babies for his age, he would be bigger than 75 of them. I'm having great difficulty burping him. I can no longer sit him up on my lap because he has an extremely strong neck and he throws it backwards. He also has extremely strong legs and refuses to straighten them out, kicking himself back in to his feeding position lol I have also tried putting him over my shoulder but he still keeps throwing his head back which prevents me from burping him properly. I try to put him on his stomach to burp him but it won't come up. My partners nanna who is a nurse suggested lifting his diaphram but when I do this, he chucks up.

Any suggestions???

Re: Burping help

i do it it the same way with over the shoulder but if it has gotten to the point they really are having trouble with wind you can go to your local woolworths and get something called gripe water  and this stuff will help so well

i hope this helps

Re: Burping help

As gross as it is - throwing up is a good way to get rid of the excess he is eating (especially as you siad he is REALLY hungry)!!

The best method I ever found was sitting them on my knee whilst titlting them forward and holding their chins with my left hand, burping with the right hand - rubbing in an upward motion alternating with patting.  But if he throws himself back I guess that might not help you.

Re: Burping help

That's how I used to burp him when he was first born, it worked really well until he got a bit stronger =)

Re: Burping help

Thank you stacey I tried this earlier. Although it didn't help much with the burping it did help him get rid of his wind in other ways (farting) and I also found your method helped him poo better. So thank you very much

Re: Burping help

It can be very difficult to burp babies sometimes, got one here who can take a while to give up any wind.

The solution that works for us it to put bubs over our shoulder but with us leaning backwards slightly (semi reclined).  Bubs is snug, gets to have a look around and have tummy time, and those burps are easier to get up.

We are also quite firm with patting her back.  The firmer the back pats, the easier it is to move the trapped gas.  We pat her back starting down near her nappy and work upwards, which encourages the wind to escape.

We don't burp bubs for more than a couple of minutes at a time.  Some babies don't swallow that much air, and some do.  If after a couple of minutes no joy, then more than likely, there is no wind to get rid of.

I breastfeed and break the feeds up into 3 parts- side 1 part A, side 1 part B, and side 2.  She gets burped between each part, and has her nappy changed between the last 2 as well as a play in her bed.  This seems to help to minimize wind and the play helps to get rid of more.

Re: Burping help

Thanks heaps Arna, I found this method the most effective. It didn't occur to me to just recline the chair and lean backwards to stop him from leaning backwards. Doh ;-)

Re: Burping help

When I had my son, my Nana came and stayed with me.
My son is a very big baby also (kicks your babys booty, his in the 97th percentile :S) and she laid him down on her lap with her legs closed so his chin was near her knees and rubbed and patted his back like that.
Its worth a try.

The other thing is, if he is a big boy, it might not be too long before he is able to burp himself also, my son could bring up his own wind from about 13 weeks, and he does it fantastically lol, he could blow a head off.

Re: Burping help

Why not try and lay your son on his side,on a bed. And at the same time you rub his back. do this for about five minutes., while you are talking to him. as this may take his mind of his wind. And he listening to your voice, my kids loved it, and it gives you time with your son at the same time. when rubbing, make sure you rub down and up with the palm of your hand. I hope this helps. Karen

Re: Burping help

Thanks a bunch Shsmm. Although it's difficult to do this inbetween burps and feeding I found your method works best after drinking the last bit of his feed before he settles/ goes to sleep. It gets any of the remaining bubbles out =)
