Child Hurting themselves

Well the last couple of mornings I have gotten Damian up and found bruises on his head and legs and bite marks on his arms. This is really concerning me as I have tried looking up to see if this is a symptom of some sort, but cannot find any references to a 19 month old hurting himself.

Is this normal and how can i stop it as it is happening when he is in his cot?? or Should I talk to a dr. about it??

going to the doctors would be a good idea children hurting themselves is a sign of distress,as I have been told by a doctor sorry to be so blunt.

Yea I am going to take him to the dr. next week as he isn't settling for his daytime naps anymore and this week is already booked out with packing and trying to go to a memorial service etc.

Re: Child Hurting themselves

Is he teething? Also my babies have all had some sort of comforter when put in their cots (Pacifier, Blanket, Teddy) that they would squeeze and chew or suck on when going to sleep. I have seen alot of babies suck their thumbs and give theirself "lovebites" when trying to go to sleep. Maybe your son is using his self as a pacifier, try putting a soft little blanket in his hands when he goes to bed

He has a soft blanket which he goes to sleep with, also has a rabbit that he sleeps with but usually ends up on the floor by morning. I know he is teething he just got the last of his incisors broke thru the last couple of days.

Re: Child Hurting themselves

My cousin used to bite herself when she had done something clumsy or was unable to articulate her feelings verbally. (This was when she was 3). Because she was very verbal my aunt was able to encourage her to talk her feelings out rather than take it out on herself. Damian may not be old enough to say things that are upsetting him coherently when he is frustrated with himself so maybe you could talk about a sound he could make to express himself when he was feeling strongly about something, or get a squeezy pillow or toy that he can squeeze really hard when those feelings come on.

I seem to recall you are expecting? He probably has some anxiety about that too.

Definately talk to your doctor if you are concerned still though. Poor little mite- they have such complex feelings but not as many ways as we have to express them.

Hugs,

K

Re: Child Hurting themselves

I think you are spot on about not being able to verbally communicate as well as he would like. He is behind in his speech because he has had hearing problems since he was born he can hear properly now but it put him up to 3 years behind in his talking.

I think he might be feeling nervous about a new baby coming as I don't think he fully understands what is going on.

I would get him a squeezy pillow for him but he would just throw it out of his cot and that is when he seems to be harming himself round when he wakes up in the morning. Usually I am still asleep when he wakes up so the sound wouldn't work either.

But I might go and talk to my dr./health nurse see what they suggest.
