My sister in law and brother have two boys and when it was time to potty train them they would put cherio's in the toilet to float around and then they would get them to pee in the middle of the cherio rings.  I can't help you when it comes to the other.

Are you still putting nappies on him? What I have done with both of my boys (number 2 is in the process of training now) is take their nappies off & only use them for sleeping. I only use pullups or disposable training pants if we are leaving the house...otherwise I use washable training pants, jocks or nothing. The best thing you can do is leave the nappies off and never put them back on - yes you will have messes to clean up and lots of clothes to wash but it's worth it for the end result. My oldest son took a lot longer to train in regards to poo....you just have to persist and be positive - never ever yell or get angry no matter how frustrated you get...and believe me you will get VERY frustrated at times! Have you tried to just take the diaper off and not let him have it to poo??  thats what I ended up doing and it worked out great!
