Re: Weaning a 6 month old onto a bottle
we are currently experiencing the exact same problem with our 6 month old, but making improvements, thanks to the advice from other mintiers. I found that my daughter prefers an orthodontic teat. try getting dad to offer the bottle so that baby doesn't think that something better is nearby. i found leaving the room promoted better feeding. Offer expressed milk, rather than formula. Wait at least an hour or two before offering the breast after a bottle attempt- if baby thinks he is going to get a breastfeed straight after a bottle attempt, then he wont try as hard. try doing alternate breast and bottle feeds whilst he is learning, then he will still get his daily intake requirement. make sure you pump everytime he has a bottle feed, to keep up your supply for the expressed milk (unless you want to wean him off breastfeeding). we stared out slowly, just offering one bottle per day, until she got used to it (as i have a few weeks before i have to get back to work). i found the position of feeding to be important too. My baby feeds the best when she is sat in my lap facing me, with her head in my left hand, and feeding with my right hand. i try to keep eye contact with her and talk to her to encourage her focus. If i cardled her, it was too close to my breast, and she would just turn her head the wrong way. try to remove anything in the room that distracts him. maybe try a faster flowing teat (the teats you are using may be newborn teats) especially if you have a strong letdown- babies can get impatient with having to work hard for milk to come out the bottle. Go for a teat that is designed for older babies- with larger or more holes. sometimes, if i walk around with my baby during a bottle feed, she feeds better.
good luck. i know this can be frustrating and time consuming.
also agree with the others- you should in future avoid honey before the age of one.
