hearing and vision

Yesterday I learned that my son has a significant hearing loss at only 8 months old. He passed his infant screening and to be quite honest I didn't expect to hear bad news when he came out of the sedated test. On top of this he has a very rare eye disease FEVR that has affected his vision. He goes for his 2nd laser/cryo surgery on Jan 9th to try and help this condition. I was just wondering if any parents that had a child suffering from either one of these complications had any advice. I want to make sure that we are stimulating him and he is able to develop as best as possible. If anyone knew of any toys that their child seemed to really like or any advice we would love to hear it.

Thanks,

Re: hearing and vision

My sister is deaf in one ear and was a straight A student. She had to sit up the front of class and needed help in saying some words. But no one would ever notice that she was half deaf.

Re: hearing and vision

Sorry its taken a while to get an answer to you. I have a son with Down Syndrome who had some issues with hearing at that age. Athough not to your son's extent.

Anything tactile is useful, blocks with raised pictures, books with 3-D type pictures, toys with bright lights when you push buttons etc

Also did get in contact with the Shepard Centre (Australia) as they support families with children who have hearing issues. http://www.shepherdcentre.com.au/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=282

Cheers, Miriam

Re: hearing and vision

Sorry I only just read that you are from the U.S.

I'm sure that there is something similar over there to the Shepard Centre, take a look at the web site anyway!
