formula

not a question just interested in what other mums think.

1)  i was unable to breast feed do to a few things, so my midwife suggested S26 formula as it was close to breastmilk.

however my friend h as decided to tell me that my son will have problems cos S26 is full of preservatives and Karicare is better for babies.  my son who is nearly 8 months has thrived on S26. So i want to know what brand you use and why. eg cheaper, suggested it etc.

ps this friend is one of these mums who think  they know all there is to babies and if someone does it differently then theyr wrong in raising bub.

Re: formula

We have 3 kids aged from5yrs, 3yrs and 3mths all where bottle fed do to my wifes health problems they are all going great guns with our yougest we tried her on Heinze but she did not gain any weight when we switched back to S26 she started to gain weight till she is now the right weioght for her age.

If your son is doing ok on S26 then stick with it.

Karicare is more expensive than S26

the only way is to compare them against each other or buy a tin and see how he goes.

good luck

Re: formula

Formy 1st child who was a premmie i used S26 as special care nursery gave her that from day 1.

And for my second child i started to use S26 but it didnt suit her and kept bringing it up just like my breast milk so with trail and error i ended up using  Karicare for her.

If S26 works for your child then its fine.

Good luck and you shouldnt worry what others say.

Re: formula

My Youngest is 4 and he was prem, now i never breastfed, being prem the hospital neo natal supplied the formula which was S26 gold, so if a hospital neonatal supply S26 gold then i am pretty sure its safe...Another thing i found out about...My eldest 2  aged 10 and 6 were as i said bottle fed and i put them on a product called SMA  in which a nurse told me about...About 6 mths ago i found out that SMA is actually made by S26 and SMA is half the price than S26.

I think your friend dosn't know what she is on about, and if she actually reads all the formulas that are on the market they all preatty much have the same ingredients just diffrent dosage( maybe one or 2 extra ingrediants thats it)

Tassie

Re: formula

I raised 2 babies on s26 and my sister is feeding it to her baby now! all three are bright, happy, healthy kids!

Anyway,I think I'd take the midwifes' advice over a know all friend,in my experience people who think they know everything, usually know very little X

Re: formula

All 4 of my children have been on s26, and they range in age from 17 years to 14 months.  The only problem I ever had with it was I accidentally purchased the stage 2 tin of the s26 gold when our youngest was about 11.5 months. Given that I wasn't able to get back down the shops to exchange it or buy another I decided to try him on it.  He loved the taste, however it seemed to make him constipated.  When I changed him back to the stage 1 he was back to normal within 12 hrs.  Given the constipation issue, up until he was about 13 months I was using both the stage 1 and stage 2 and would alternate his feeds.

Re: formula

If your baby is thriving on s26 then that says it all,I had one of my children on s26 but that was because when he was born the hospital only had s26 and Nan and he didn't take to well to Nan that but all my other children were on Lactogen and  I think I only used that one because my mother said I was on that one when I was a baby, it didn't do me any harm,it filled them I was happy

Re: formula

I have breastfed all of my children however I have known other mothers who have been advised to try alternative formulas for one reason or another. One mother had a baby with quite bad reflux and was advised to use one that had a slightly thicker consistency.

However, if your baby is thriving then there is no reason to change formula's.  They are all approved for sale and contain the nutrients that your baby required.

Re: formula

I used karicare gold because it sounded better with the little "extra vitamin" jingle on the side of the tin and it looked better in a gold tin lol Nothing like a little advertising honesty. He can't drink it now anyway and is on de lact karicare.

Re: formula

My baby is breastfed, however we have had various tins in the cupboard for 'just in case' I didn't have time to express or whatever. I've always just got whatever was on special and it hasn't seemed to bother old goat guts.

However, my friend's son had terrible problems with his skin from birth (worst I have ever seen poor little mite) and the hospital insisted on the S26 gold for him. Whenever he tried anything else he would break out in lesions etc which was awful for him. The S26 gold was the only thing that calmed his skin down. To me this says that this is a very hypoallergenic formula so I don't know what your friend is talking about. If your son is thriving (and it looks like he is) then pardon my french but tell her to rack off!

k xoxo

Re: formula

The midwife recomended the s26 gold for my baby, and she was taking it since day 1. But i feel that s26 is making my baby a fat baby, i don't know maybe not from the milk..

Re: formula

I use S26gold because thats what they gave Krue in hospital when he wouldn't feed, and my nurse suggested it.
I have had no problems with it, and plan on using it for my next baby also.

I will admit I didnt do much research but I personally think if thats what the hospital is giving babies, im going to copy them!

Re: formula

Also remember they have to pass very strict tests to be approved for sale, and all have to have the same minerals and vitamins in them, so it doesnt matter which one you pick.
Every child is different and responds differently to each formula.

I had tried normal S26 with Krue but he was having trouble with constipation, so I switched him back.

Re: formula

I could not breastfeed at all with any of my four children.  I used formula from their birth up until twelve months old.  All my kids are extremely healthy and have hardly ever been sick at all.  They are advanced with their schooling and social skills, so they have not suffered in anyway at all.  With my last baby I used Amcal chemist brand.  They are all fairly similar, so you need to choose one that best suits your budget and is liked by the baby.  I always made sure form birth that my babies had water by it self as well.  Now my kids all drink heaps of water, as we do not have softdrink , cordial or anything like that in the house.  So do what you think is right, and dont let others judge you on the decision you make, parenthood is hard work and these silly things make it that much harder, I had so many judge me, I must be such a bad mum for not breast feeding , but guess what, my children, are very healthy, happy and intelligent kids, so i must of done something right.

Re: formula

Don't listen to what others have to say just go with your mummy instincts.    We used s26 gold.  I tried to BF for about 6weeks, I was also topping up 'cause that is what was reccommended to me at the hospital.  The hospital used s26 and when my partner went out to get formula he found s26 gold and decided that this was better, we used S26 gold right up untill bubs was almost 14mths.

Re: formula

Hey Racechick

I used Karicare but only because my daughter loved it I tried many others first before i found the right one and obviously u have found the right one with S26, really they r all the same (although lots of mothers like your friend will say differently because they think if their child is on it every child should be having it). Really i think you should stick with what works and you've found it! Tell your firend "Each to their own" and maybe she will shut up. lol

Re: formula

Hi,

I was only able to breast feed my second for six months then I put him on Karicare gold.  He always had the runs and upset tummy.  I then put him on S26 which he just loved and his stomach stopping being upset he started sleeping thru and just all around a happier child.  I"m with you the S26 is great and what's more it's cheaper.
