throwing up, fever.

My son's caught this stomach flu that seems to be going around.  He has a fever and has puked a couple of times, and has chills.

What do I do if he throws up abotu 20 minutes after he got tylenol?  Will it have been absorbed already?  Can I give him more?

I'm not sure what to do for him, beyond giving him tylenol and soda crackers and fluids.

Tips?

Re: throwing up, fever.

When my kids throw up I give them  a drink that contains raspberry juice. Not the artificial raspberry but something that contains the juice. Can be in cordial but read label. or juice but water it down. My kids will throwup one more time after drinking it but then will stop throwing up. It always works for me. Or I use a herbal tea that has raspberry in it. I soak a tea bag in water for a period of time and them add  cold water according to taste. Works just as well but with no added sugar. Also good  for gastro. Good luck hope this helps!

Re: throwing up, fever.

i agree with what most people have written. its the same as panadol, it absorbs within 20 min and begins to bring the fever down.

it is also recommended that you do not give them more as you'll overdose them and they can get even sicker..

poor little one!! its so sad to see them sick :( hope all is well :)

Re: throwing up, fever.

poor baby.

20 minutes is long enough for a large percentage of the drug to be aborbed, so you will need to wait 4-6 hours before giving it again.  be sure not to give any more than 4 doses in 24 hours.  as tylenol is paracetamol based, you may give some nurofen as well, in between doses of paracetamol, or after a vomit, as these are 2 different drugs but have the same anti fever effect.

give him small amounts of fluid frequently. start with 2ml per kg every 20 minutes (this is what we call a trial of fluids). ie. if your son weighs 8kg, then offer 16ml every 20 minutes (use a very weak cordial- not strong, as the sugar will draw out fluid from his body, or you could buy some hydralyte from the chemist).  if he tolerates this then gradually increase the volume.  if he does not tolerate this then he may need to go to your local emergency dept or dr for assessment, particularly if he starts diarrhoea as well.

keep an eye on his hydration, if you are worried that he is having less wet nappies, he has no tears when he cries, if his mouth and lips look dry or if his eyes look sunken then he needs to be seen by a dr.

hope he feels better soon.

Re: throwing up, fever.

We have been told the same thing.

Can you call the ped and see if you can rotate the tylenol wiht Motrin??? Ours let us. We do tyelnol and 4 hours later do Motrin when Jedd has a fever.

Also when Jedd's got really high, they allowed me to care for him at home (Jedd has medical issues so I get ALOT of leeway to keep him at  home during illness that would normally be sent toe he ER for). They gave me a higher than the bottles recommendation of the doese for both tylenol and motrin and also allowed me to roate on a 3 hour basis.

I, however, would NEVER do this on my own, CALL the PED.!!!!!

Don't get mad if they don't allow you to do this, for use like I said, I get ALOT of leeway with Jedd. And have ALOT of experience delaing with issues at home.

More than likely, they will send you to the ER for an eval after hours. It's jsut that for us, the ER is the WORSE place to send Jedd and his PEd and all the other Peds in the practice know this so we avoid it at all costs.

I hope your little one is on the mend soon!!!!

Durign sicknes was the ONE time I was extrmely thankful fo rJEdd's feeding tube. I could use it like a makeshift I.V. for hydartion all day nd all night....*YAY*

Re: throwing up, fever.

i haven't heard of motrin before, perhaps its not available in australia.  from what i can find, motrin is a brand name for ibuprofen and should be the same as nurofen (also a brand name).

its fine to rotate paracetamol and ibuprofen.  you should always get advice when it comes to medications.  i have used this combination of meds many times with my patients, so i know that it is safe.

be very careful when giving more than the recommended dose, as these doses are calculated on weights and therapeutic ranges.  for jedd this may be fine under medical supervision, but perhaps its unecessary to share this with the public, as other mums may read into it the wrong way leading to overdoses.

Re: throwing up, fever.

It won't lead to an overdose as long as she does what I told her and CALLS the DR first. That's the reason why I did NOT give doses on my post.

That's why I stated it more than once.

Re: throwing up, fever.

Fantastic advice......exactly keep up the small but frequent amount of fluids and drop the crakers for now. ANY concerns go to DR's or emergancy dept.

It is very contagious so keep bubs away from any other children.

Take care, Miriam

Re: throwing up, fever.

keep giving him fluids and crackers that is the only thing you can do if you are still worried go to the doctor they may be able to give him something to stop the vomiting. Depending on how old your son is they maybe able to give him an injection like they do with adults anyway it would be worth giving the doctors a ring or make an appointment.

Re: throwing up, fever.

Even though he has thrown up you still should wait for the recommended hours to give him and more medication because you can not be sure how much his body has absorbed.

Re: throwing up, fever.

I would give him a half dose if necessary...if he is still fevering...I would also say go back to the BRAT (banans, rice apple toast) diet.  This flu is nasty
