Morning after

Does anyone know if 'the morning after pill' is available in Australia? If so can you just get it at the chemist or do you need a perscription?

Any other info about it would be good too.

I had a miscarriage in Oct and am not emotionally ready yet.

Re: Morning after

hiya!

yes it is available in australia and you dont ned a prescription! bloody expensive though!! I only know that cause when my daughter was 2 and half months old, the condom broke even though i was on the pill (hadn't done a full cycle of it yet) i only got it cause i wasn't quite ready to go through the 9 months again and i was battling post natal depression as it was! though i did feel guilty in case i had fallen preggers again.

word of warning though, when you take it, you tend to bleed quite heavy and can have nasty tummy cramps. But then again all women are different! :)

Re: Morning after

i used to deal with this problem all the time.

you can get it over the counter at any chemist in australia but are asked for ID . its mainly for women who have been raped (tho they normally recieve it in the hos if they go there) or for girls who have had one nighters.  you will be counciled about ur decision the questions they ask are things like your age, have you had sex before ect.

most chemist give u info on the morn after pill, some send u to see a womens health nurse/counciler everything is private and confidentional.  most will ask if u have seen a dr or if u are goin to see a dr.

Re: Morning after

I've taken the morning after pill twice and both times I was able to get it over the counter from a local chemist/pharmacist. And yes I live in Australia. However the 1st time I got the pill from my local chemist where I received a councelling session first and had to answer a few questions but when I went back there a second time (maybe 2 years later) the pharmacist wouldn't give it out to me because of his religious beliefs (I didn't think he was allowed to do this but supposedly he can). So I went to another chemist and was given it over the counter with a leaflet and nothing explained to me  so luckily I already knew what I was doing.

From what I know off the top of my head it should be taken within at least 72 hours of unprotected sex as the chances of it working decrease rapidly over time. So it is most effective if taken immediately or within the first 24 hours. Some girls have side effects such as nausea, headaches, etc. and I was really really nervous about taking it but luckily for me I was fine both times. It used to come as 2 pills that you had to take exactly 12 hours apart but I think now you can take both pills at once or it may even only come as one pill now. Just ask your pharamacist if you are unsure. And also ask for a leaflet explaining the drug and how it works and any side effects you may have. Also if you are breastfeeding you are going to have to stop for 3 days after taking the pill. The second time I took the pill I was breastfeeding a newborn so I had to express my milk for 3 days and throw it out while I fed my son formula and milk I'd expressed and frozen before I took the pill.

And lastly I hope nobody judges you for your decision as it is a very personal choice. The first time I took it I was only 16 and did not want a baby to this particular guy and the second time was with my current partner after we'd had our first child. We were so tired from lack of sleep we weren't sure if we'd used our protection properly lol so to be sure I took the morning after pill as my body wouldn't have been ready to carry another baby so soon after the first. Good luck to you and I hope everything works out for you!!

Re: Morning after

Emergency contraception was  available without a prescription from January 1 2004 for the first time in Australia.

Pharmacists have been advised to create private counselling areas for women requesting the morning-after pill when it is sold over the counter.

So there you go. You can go to your local chemist and get it over the counter. I remember when i was in high school which wasnt that long ago in sex ed they use to always say the morning after pill was available over the counter. and that you didnt need to go to the doctors. I think it was cause too many people was going in to the doctors to get it.

Hope this helps

Re: Morning after

It is my understanding that 'the morning after' pill can be prescribed by a Dr.  It is regularly provided to rape victims.

Like every major medical decision, you should always speak to your doctor FIRST.

Hope this helps.

Pete
