she bit me!

Hi All,

while feeding Katelyn yesterday she bit me and I now have a small cut on my nipple, it is painful to feed her on that side ao last night I expressed thinking it would heal overnight. it didnt and when I fed her this morning the pain was far to much to bear.

any ideas on how to aid the healing or do I just put up with it till it heals itself?

thanks in advance.

Re: she bit me!

As has been mentioned below, Lansinoh!  It is a lanolin based product that acts as a moisturiser and a protective barrier against saliva.  Beeing completely natural (purified lanolin which comes from sheep and is low-no allergin even if you react to wool) it does not require being washed off prior to feeding.

I did write an advice article on it here  I have also tried the Palmers Coco Butter Nipple Care Cream, but it isn't as good, it does smell yummy though!, being made from coco oil and all!

there are other products out there you can try, but the lanolin based ones are the only ones that actually provide a good protective barrier for longer.

Just one more thing.  I've got my 5th baby starting to teeth, and when she starts to get to that real bitey stage, I'm going to be putting Bonjela on my nipples before a feed.  This will numb them somewhat and is an easy way to apply it to bubs gums as well.

Lansinoh..  Lansinoh..  Lansinoh.

I cannot sing the praises of this stuff enough..  It's pure lanolin so you do not have to worry about washing it off before you feed..

Also breastmilk contain's healing property's.

Re: she bit me!

ouch.

you could try applying some pure lanolin- i use lasinoh from the chemist.  or nipple sheilds during feeding.  just make sure you continue to empty this breast regularly either by feeding or expressing, otherwise you may get blocked ducts or mastitis. the combination of broken skin being a portal of bacteria entry and engorgement can cause probs.

dont be worried if your baby vomits a bit of red or brown streaked milk, as this will just be a bit of blood from your nipple.

take some panadol half hour before a feed. remember to be conscious of your back and neck when feeding, try to relax these muscles on exhaling, as painful feeding can make you tense in these areas and cause another area of pain (been there done that!)

hope it heals quick.

I would look into nipple shields while you're healing.

Owwwww... I remember this and it is not pleasant, feel for you....

Rubbing some of your breast milk onto the cut can also help fix the cut...Also put some on just before the feed and just after. They say let the nipples have air but that depends if you are happy walking around with your breast out...

There are also these nipple pad things available from the chemist that can help the nipple heal from cracked nipples so maybe they can help too....

Hope it gets better soon...
