basically the deal is- my 5 week old son only poops every 3-4 days and it is REALLY big and really sloppy. It goes everywhere!

Im just wondering if this is normal? He doesnt seem in pain or uncomfortable so Im not too stressed, I just want to make sure.

Also can anyone give me any tips on how to stop it getting everywhere coz its really gross. LOL.

Thanks.

Re: really big poops

My son started doing the same thing around the same age. For his first few weeks of life, he would poo every day, up to 3-4 times a day. The poos at this stage were very thick and paste-like. By week 5-6, he was down to one poo a day, but they had become watery. Since 8 weeks, he has been pooing every 3-7 days, and they are HUGE, very watery, and go absolutely everywhere.

I use disposable nappies and do have the odd nappy explosion, which does result in having to give Bubs a bath. If you're using disposables, there's not really a lot that can be done. I think it also comes down to the brand as well, some brands can be better than others. I only use Huggies and have only had a couple of nappies leak, and it's usually up his back.

As long as your baby is 100% breastfed, anything he does is normal. I've been told some baby's can go up to 21 days between poos and I really couldn't imagine how 21 days worth of poo would look. That's a scary thought! If your son is 100% breastfed, one of the only real problems to look out for is poo going hard and looking like pellets, that's constipation but it very very very rarely happens to a baby who is only breastfed.

By 3 months, a baby's digestive system should be calming down and working itself out so your son may very well change his poo routine more than once.

Re: really big poops

I agree with all the previous re;plies but suggest you may also try varying his diet.  If he is breastfeeding 100% try an occaisional formula replacement.  Also pay some attention to YOUR diet, if you are breastfeeding then he is ingesting the same nutrients as you be they good or bad.

You could even try to start him on some solids. If he is already on solids, try preparing your own whereby you can know exactly what is going into it.  Remember what goes in comes out.........

Re: really big poops

I empathise! My first bub pooed about 3 times a day - just little smears.  But my seconed bub would save it up and go every couple of days.  We would need to bath him each time because of the mess (it would go right up to the back of his neck!!!).

It won't be long befor things settle down.  It won't be forever, do the best you can, it is perfectly normal.  Good luck.

Re: really big poops

i agree with everyone so far that this is normal.......as for the mess, with my current baby i am using modern cloth nappies, and they seem to hold in a lot more poo than disposables.  if your bub is a big pooper, maybe try some baby beehinds (i find the all in ones dont hold as much as the hemp or bamboo with separate covers).  you could also try nappy covers over the top of disposable nappies.  also use a towel or disposable change mat (huggies are good) on the change table, to contain mess. have fun!!

Re: really big poops

it's completly normal, especially if your breastfeeding. sometimes my son would only do one once a weekor so, and it would go everywhere like you said.

Not sure there is much you can do about it, but chuck everything in the wash, and give him a bath.  Good luck

This is completely normal - especially if you are breastfeeding. Don't stress about it at all...just be glad he's not doing it everyday!

Re: really big poops

Are you breastfeeding?  I know with mine, her poop rate was quite high for the first 3 months after her birth, about 4-5 dirty nappies a day that were full and rather sloppy.  She is breastfed 100%.

At this age, a babies digestive system is still trying to adjust to having formula/breastmilk.  This means lots of dirty nappies every day for a few weeks.  If on formula, you will continue to have at least a couple of dirty nappies a day, as formula is heavier than breastmilk.  With a breastfed baby, you can expect them to drop the number to as little as one every couple of weeks.

During a growth spurt, they will poop less due to their bodies using more of what goes in.
