2nd Birthday Party?

Ok so my son is turning 2 on Valentine's Day this year and with Christmas just behind us I didn't realise how soon his birthday was. I would like to hold a party for him with his 2 year old friends and plan on holding it in a park somwhere as having 10 toddlers running around messing up my house is not my idea of fun LOL!! So does anyone have any ideas on what to do for a 2nd birthday party? And I need snacks that are somewhat healthy but don't need to stay refrigerated as February is hot hot HOT?? Please help . . Oh and what do people think on asking for no gifts on the invites? Is this rude?

Re: 2nd Birthday Party?

For food you need small things their little hands can hold and shove in their mouths, for fun maybe the parachute game but with a sheet or tarpauline or the likes, perhaps ask for their bikes and you can have an obstacle course or they can just ride around,  music for some dancing, mini olympics where every child is a winner etc. I am sure you can figure it out with enough ideas.

You might find that people are having trouble thinking of the appropriate gift for your son and are pleased they dont have to provide one. IF they feel guilty ask them to buy a small gift for a little boy or girl and give it to the ronald mcdonald house or something similar nearest them to brighten a childs day.

Re: 2nd Birthday Party?

Thank you for your suggestions! Yeah I just find that with so many toddlers in our Mother's Group I find it expensive buying them all gifts every year when they have a birthday party so I am secretly hoping they will follow suite and do the same thing lol! Well I can hope!! But the small gift actually gave me an idea - if they really want to buy Jesse something I will suggest a matchbox car - they're $2 and keep him entertained for hours LOL!!

Re: 2nd Birthday Party?

At two, most toddlers are pretty easily impressed. You don't need to do much to make a big impression.  The less structure, the easier it will be for you, without taking away from your son's experience.

Don't have hard and fast activities. Have a few options on hand on the day and be prepared to include them or exclude them as fits in with the mood of the group. One game might be really popular and go much longer than expected. Others may be hard to manage depending on the age and stage of the kids there.

Keep it really short. An hour and a half is heaps for this age group.

For snacks, nutella on bread and cream cheese spread on bread rolled into scrolls is a hit with little ones. Pieces of fruit, sultanas and dried appricots and strawberries are like lollies if you are two. Arrowroot biscuits decorated with ready made icing and a few smarties and sprinkles is popular food at "day care" parties.

If you want to avoid gifts, one option could be to ask your guests to bring a plate of food to share and possibly even suggest this could be in place of a gift.  The downside is you won't be able to control the health aspect of the food in this case.

I hope that helps a little bit.

Re: 2nd Birthday Party?

Yeah I wasn't planning on having any games I was just going to let the kids entertain themselves on the playground haha!! As for the snacks I am going to include tiny packets of sultanas in the lolly bags so that should be good and I like the milk arrowroot suggestion!! Thank you for your help!!

Re: 2nd Birthday Party?

I agree with Fiona. I had the same thoughts about asking people to bring a plate of food rather than a gift. As far as controlling what people bring in that case, you could specify on the invitation what you would like them to bring... Eg A plate of celery and carrots cut into sticks... People are always happy to help, not to mention it's generally much cheaper than buying a gift anyway.
As for activities, 2 is a great age for keeping it simple since they'll just run around, play on the playground and keep themselves amused. If you did want to do something a little bit different though, and if you have access to these items, you could always buy a roll/sheets of butchers paper and use it as a tablecloth on a picnic bench, then put out crayons so that the kids can colour and draw pictures on it. Just something interesting to keep and pull out at a later date, or even send home drawings with the kids who attended the party. :)
Just a thought anyway. :D
