does anyone know what it could be?

hi, im totally freaking out at the moment, and the doctors aren't being very helpful.

the problem is i found a hard lump ( feels like bone ) in my daughters chest about 10cm long and 2 cm wide, shaped like a rib yesterday. i took her to the hospital as i though she must have injured herself some how and they did x-rays which didn't show the lump on the film.

they told me they still have no idea what it could be, that its wasn't bone and wasn't an emergency and to just go home. im really worried and stressing and hoping someone might have had the same thing happen and help to shed some light.

thankyou

I can imagine how scary it would be finding something like that.  I see further down, you have an ultrasound booked to see what this thing could be, try not to worry about things until that is done, but don't expect the answer straight away as it has to go through the ordering doctor first.

It is possible that it could be a fatty deposit, which should show up on the ultrasound.  Most of these are harmless, and should go away in time.

If your daughter has had an injury that has healed, then it could be excess tissue around the wound.  These are called gangleons and for the most part, are harmless.  I have one in my wrist due to a sports injury, and it can be a pain in the wrist, but mostly, its fine (lots of computer time helps! lol).

Take your worry levels down a bit, and just wait until the ultrasound before you go assuming th worst.

Hi Proudmum

Not sure if this will help at all, but in my experience (mother of 6 and lots of hours spent at the Emergency room over the years), the docs can be quite unable to comfort you with your anxieties about how you feel about your childs unknown conditions... As parents, if we havent experienced it, we have no idea how to react! My child Isaac had a seizure of some kind on New Years Day, he turned blue and everything..After a ride in an ambulance and a few blood tests they said well no idea what caused it, we'll get some tests done next week, he can go home!. In my head I'm thinking, ' he turned blue a few hours ago and you sending him home!!!!'

Strangely enough I feel that lots of these docs that have not so good bedside manner, are employed into their jobs because of their exceptional abilities as professionals.. I guess we just have to trust that theres nothing immediately life threatening going on and that's why they send us home with our child and our thoughts..

I'm going through the same feelings as you atm, what caused his problem and what are the results going to be? Am I going to get bad news for him.. theres nothing more intimidating than the possibility that something may not be right with your child and you are well entitiled to feel insecure and even scared..

My advice would be to be strong and turn to whoever you can for support and to vent ( those that care for you will understand) stand beside your child and be positive for her as she gets the tests done. Ask a few questions during the ultrasound, some radiologists can be very helpful as they have seen alot and know quite a bit.. although they wont give you a diagnosis. And when the doctor relays the results to you, listen intently and ask questions..

One thing that confused me was, did she always have this lump or has it just happened seemingly overnight?

Cheers

Mel xx

Re: does anyone know what it could be?

finding lumps in your child that aren't supposed to be there is always scary.  i myself have felt this fear with my son, who had unexplained enlarged lymph nodes (working in the kids oncology ward means that sometimes i know a little too much when it comes to these things).  he is fine though.  just wait and see what the ultrasound says, it may be nothing, and although it is hard, there is no point worrying about something until you really have to.  doctors are never helpful when they are looking for a diagnosis.....its part of their job to rule things out but at the same time, to not unecessarily stress parents out with all the potentials, (although it leaves you in the dark, that is for them to worry about-thats what they get paid for).  you need to be prepared for the fact that the ultrasound may be inconclusive and more tests may be needed.  i really hope it all works out ok for you both.
