Toddler Help?

I really need some advice here. All of this started yesterday. My son who is almost 2 learnt how to take off his nappy and after searching the whole house yesterday I was sure he hadn't left anything behind for me. Well today when I was eating breakfast he took his nappy off again and then peed on the floor. I was angry and I told him off (I didn't smack him). I just said what he did was naughty (we have carpet). Anyway I put a new nappy on him and soaked up the wee and then sprinkled it with bi-carb soda. I came out to finish my breakfast only for him to come out with a whole cup of bi-carb soda and put it up my nose before I had a chance to notice. (He usually makes me fake cup of teas with his picnic set and so I thought there was nothing in there as usual and he put a whole spoon of bi-carb soda up my nose)!! I yelled because it burnt like absolute hell and then laid down on the couch with a compress against my nose. Well . . . Jesse came out again with his nappy off grrrr and this time his bum was all pooey. Where did he poo? In his bathtub on top of all his toys and then wiped it all over my good jacket arrrrghhhh!! That one he got a telling off for too!! So my questions are: 1. Is this normal toddler behaviour and if it is how can I stop it? 2. Is my son ready for potty training? and 3. How and what do I use to clean it off my jacket and then out of the bath? I have such a weak stomach and even with a mask on I can not handle the smell. As soon as I get close I start gagging - what am I supposed to do?? And how am I supoosed to potty train my son when he isn't even talking yet and has no way of letting me know he needs to go??? Arrrrgghhh I am so upset and at a loss - I don't know what to do? I'm sitting here crying . . this was not something I thought of when having children :o(!! And how am I supposed to rest when I fall pregnant if I can't even take my eyes off him for 1 second??? :o(

I feel for you on this one....I remeber when my eldest was about 18 mths and she got her nappy off and pooed in her cot....OMG!!! it was awful and gross and yuck and boy does it smell and I was also pregnant....Yuck Yuck Yuck....

I tried the toilet training thing and was getting nowhere and was awfully frustrated and heavily pregnant...it was not a fun time and I think that my stress did not help the situation, then a friend of mine (who was sick with cancer when her little girl was in the taking the nappy off stage) suggested especially at night and nap time when a nappy is still really important try masking taping it on....This worked for her and I must say for me....

We got there in the end and I know have an independant toilet goer...But alas 2 more to follow....I am certainly not looking forward to the nappy off stage with the next two and can hope that they will follow the leader on this one (so far my middle girl is very interested in the toilet and has been since she could walk, cause that is where big sis goes....)

I hope it all goes well and I also agree the training pants work better than the pull ups.

Oh yeah I've had the cot incident happen before too lol but that was before he had even turned 1 so he got away with it haha!! Aww poor you having to clean that up while you were pregnant - I was having a hard enough time with the smell yesterday lol!!

I might have to give the masking tape a go as he is just not interested in the potty at all. I have been trying all morning but he won't sit down on it. I'm a bit confused at how to potty train a boy !!

My mother told me that she didn't toilet train my sister - I did haha!! And we're about 2 and a half years apart so I was interested to hear that! Just can't remember how I did it lol . .

Ok I think I bought Huggies Pull-Ups - what are training pants? And what is the difference?

I agree with everyone else on the toilet training on the issue of not being able to leave him alone for 1 second - you cant really leave toddlers unsupervised at that age. if u need to rest befor u lay down walk around the house and make sure he cant reach anything dangerous like bicarb soda shut all the door like bath room ect and set him up in the same room as you with an activity toys ect that way u can still supervise and rest with out him of in another room destroying things.

Yeah I never leave Jesse unsupervised but I have a small 2x1 flat so he roams around at his own pleasure (the laundry and ktichen are barricaded off with baby gates) and as for everywhere else he knows how to open the doors so it's too hard to keep him contained. And from 2 previous experiences (one a boiling water incident and the other a camphor based ointment incident) I have learnt to keep as much as possible out of his reach. And as for household chemicals and medicines - well I only use natural ingredients for cleaning such as bi-carb, vinegar and lemon juice and I don't even take panadol so there are no medications in the house. Lol the bi-carb soda isn't so much dangerous than it was just very very messy when he found where it was hidden and very very painful when he threw it up my nose haha!! I'm just worried about resting when I fall pregnant because if he was able to get his nappy off so quickly today and do his business he could easily do it if I was say in the toilet with morning sickness or making myself a snack in the kitchen. Well I bought some training pants today so I'm going to give the potty training a go and hopefully no more "on purpose" accidents!! Thanks for your suggestions Ravenheart!!

It sounds to me like your son is definetly ready for toilet training! I would get some washable training pants for him and get started...explain to him where he is meant to do wee and poo (he will still understand even if he can't talk), let him see you go to the toilet and his father if possible. It is quite normal for kids to want to see themselves wee and poo...and some do "play" with their poo - just explain that it's yucky and naughty and that he shouldn't do it. It's best not to yell at them about these things because it can make them afraid to go to the toilet - explaining calmly is the best way, and lots of praise when he does do the right thing!

As for getting the poo off your jacket - you are either going to have to brave it yourself while gagging or get someone to do it for you. I promise you this phase will pass with encouragement from you to wee and poo in the right place! Good luck! Toosh

Hi Toosh!!

Where do you get washable training pants from? They sound good. I've heard of pull up training pants and stuff which are just like a nappy but the washable ones sound good in relation to saving money on disposable training pants! Lol well he always watches me go to the toilet (no privacy for me lol) but when he watches his Dad wee he gets his hands and face a bit too close to the stream for our comfort haha!! Yuck I used to babysit 3 children who were siblings and they would play with dog poo and throw it at each other and myself - needless to say I stopped working for them. Yes I was careful not to to yell at him or smack him but the bi-carb soda up the nose got me mad lol because it hurt like hell haha!!

Well I've just braved the bathroom and the jacket myself - not pleasant at all!! Now his bath toys are soaking in disinfectant!! I just had to hold my breath for world record time lol!! And thank you for all your help and suggestions - I guess it's onto potty training for us!!!

Good of your son to give you a clear message that it was time for toilet training, wasn't it??

Good on you for braving the aftermath!

with your son not talking yet, you might consider some simple sign language... this worked for our babies before they were verbal (actually from about 10 months for our youngest)... for simple things like thirsty, thank you, please, -- they were quite capable of understanding and communicating the concept... just couldn't say it yet!

I'm sure there could be some fairly simple signals for "I need to go to the bathroom" without the losing the nappy and letting it rip!

Haha yeah I started to look at it that way in the end - he must be ready if he keeps pulling his nappy off to go to the toilet

Yes the aftermath was not fun - at least the shower and bath will be thanking with me with 2 good scrubs this week lol!! His toys are still soaking lol!

I've looked into baby sign language before so it might be time to put it to good use !!

an idea for toilet training also is set your oven alarm for like 30 mins or 45 mins and when it goes of take ur kid over to the potty and see if they want to go, if they do thats great if they dont reset the alarm and keep that up for a few days till you get into a habit of reminding them to go potty
