Re: periods

It can take a while for your cycle to normalize again.  After having a baby, your body has to re-adjust the hormone levels again, and this can make your periods unpredictable.

When you breastfeed, you not only have your body trying to re-adjust after having a baby, but also having to re-adjust hormone levels that allow you to breastfeed.  I don't know if you stopped breastfeeding or not, but when you do or you decrease the number of feeds a day, your body is going to have to re-adjust again.

Naturally, all this re-adjusting is going to confuse your body, and make your cycles unpredictable.

Without more info, I can only go on what you have said, so I would say what you are experiencing is normal, though it could be upto a couple of years for your cycle to find its new normal.  Your periods may in time go back to the way they were pre pregnancy or they might completely change.

Obviously, if you are overly concerned about your periods, or are feeling unwell because of them, it might be a good idea to discuss your issues with a doctor.

Re: periods

I would go to the doctor if they are getting closer in time, Just to be sure.

My periods are normally 22 days apart so it can be a normal cycle as well.

Re: periods

I was the same when my period returned (after weaning from breastfeeding). I had a period every 2 -3 weeks and I had it very heavy!

Were you using pills before? if so, if you start that again, it will regulate your period back to 28 days.

Re: periods

Hi there,

Having kids can mess up your periods quite a bit with breast feeding and all that sort of stuff.. even stresses of parenthood and all that can change it all around! I think its quite common to have some inconsistancies with periods and stuff, but I also think that if you notice changes in your body that you dont feel comfortable with that you should most definately see your GP if it concerns you.

Bleeding regularly can have an effect on iron levels as well so he might have to prescribe some iron tabs if you are becoming deficient because of frequent bleeds so keep that in mind also... I was one of those weird mums who gave birth and then 28 days later had a period even if i bled for 4 weeks after it!! it was like 4 weeks plus my period lol.. So I majorly panic if mine is even a day late that theres something not right, even now i am every 28 days consistantly and no changes usually unless i am completely stressed and then it might be a day late or something! I even breastfed all 6 of the kids!!

The main thing here is that you are stress free and sleeping well.. so if you find you are stressed or losing sleep or any stuff like that.. its time for a check up, even if its just for piece of mind that everything is ok.

All the best

Cheers from Mel xx
