Help

My child fell into the sidewalk, she got fat lip...really fat to were you cant understand what she is saying, swollen nose. bruise on left cheek, around her nose and her left eye, plus a broken tooth all the way to the gums so her gums are pretty swollen too.  I put ice on it for 30 min, gave her motrin for pain and swelling but not working.  Anyone know what else I can try so we dont have to make hospital visit and we can wait till morning to goto her doctor?

Re: Help

Can I just state that when I was little my family did not take me to the hospital (because of worrying about welfare or Docs), Somhow they had hurt my nose, It ended up they did nothing & for the whole time at school I copped, Pugnose, Pugwash, Piggie, people pushing up their nose etc,  I went to Dr's after I left home & found my nose had been dislocated, all they had to do was take me to the hospital & have the bone stood back up, Now my whole face structure is out of wack & the bone did not grow so can not be fixed, Long story but just a demo of why people should NEVER ever leave anything to chance, TAKE TO DR's. I would never ever risk my poor babies having a problem.

Re: Help

i really think taking your CHILD straight to the hospital. something could be broken and your poor child may need specialist care  and a bump to the head need looking at. Im sorry but in my opinion, you can't not get a child looked at.

Re: Help

I'm with everyone here. Take to her to hospital now.  I think she'd be in some serious pain from those injuries.

Re: Help

I would be seeking medical advice straight away she may have a broken nose by the sounds of the bruising or it could be more who knows but i would not wait . kids are pretty resilliant but i wouldnt take the chance . i know i would rather look like an over reactive mother than risk waiting and if it bturns out to be something serious you could end up putting your child through more trauma than first necessary

Re: Help

hi, i agree with the others, get her seen today.  with that extent of facial injuries, she may have a head injury as well- at the least, concussion, at the worst, a bleed on the brain.  if she starts vomiting, has seizure, gets confused or drowsy call an ambulance.  she could possibly have facial fractures and may require an x ray.  her eye will need to be checked, as impacts like that can cause retinal tearing and the ED should also supply a dentist to have a look at her tooth.  better to be safe than sorry.  it wont go down well with the hospital staff if there is something wrong and you have delayed treatment (i know cause i'm one of them).

Re: Help

Even if you ignore for the moment that she may have a concussion or lose a tooth, she is probably in pretty serious pain.

Why would you make your little one suffer what would probably be a sleepless, painful night?  Have you ever had a cracked tooth?

She needs medical help now.

Re: Help

I don't know where you are from but it would have to be O/Seas from Australia cause you said can it wait till morning, and my suggestion is the same as the others do not wait find a dr or and a dentist you need to get your daughter looked at....Especially if you have given her something for pain and it is not working...

That sounds like a serious FALL into the sidewalk, was it from a bike? She needs to be checked and sooner rather than later.

Re: Help

I think she may need a dentist rather than a doctor, hopefully they can save the tooth .

good luck.

Re: Help

Hi there,

I understand that hospital visits can be annoying and time consuming..sitting at the emergency room with 6 little kids when they are ill isnt my idea of fun either. But it does sound pretty much like your child has taken quite a serious hit and head injuries in any way they are need to be treated and assessed by your medical professional asap..she will need to be monitored for at least 4 hours post accident to make sure of no other complications.

If you are worried about time, then call the doctor and ask them if theres an alternative to sittin at the emergency department..perhaps theres a doctor on call that can meet you down there for quicker service. Its likely that if she has visable injuries to her face she will possibly recieve priority treatment, just state that you are unsure how hard shes hit her head and they will most likely put you in ahead of others.

Brusing and swelling on the outside is actually a positive thing, this usually means the child has swelled outward and not inward so makes it way less likely to be serious head injury, but still i would not wait until tomorrow, see someone today instead is my advice.

Hope this helps,

Cheers from Mel xx
