Toothpaste,

Hi all my son is 18mth old, I usually brush his teeth at night b4 bed with just water and a toothbrush...  Is this enough?

He doesn't have all his teeth yet but the majority of them.  Should I be starting toothpaste now?   I heard it was 2years.   When did you start cleaning your kids teeth with toothpaste?

Re: Toothpaste,

I can only add a little as you have been given excellent advice here. I would start introducing him to a babies toothpaste a little at a time,....so it isn't to much of a shock and he will get use  to it.

Re: Toothpaste,

We started brushing our son's teeth with baby toothpaste at 1 year old. Just a little bit of toothpaste to get the baby use to the feel and taste.  Only did it al long as bub would tolerate it.

We became more serious about it when all their baby teeth came in.

Re: Toothpaste,

Wonderful! So great to have the habit already set!  We moved from baby toothpaste to adult around 2 1/2.  Just never try the flavoured stuff, strawberry was too yummy I guess and the move back to mint didn't go well.  One headache to avoid! LOL!!

Re: Toothpaste,

you could use baby tooth paste as it has very low levels or no fluride in it dependin on which one u buy

but the main thing is make sure he spits it out !

even if its not fluriated just so it becomes a habit

i taught my son 2 spit it out around 16 months by brushin my teeth and then spittin a lot so he was watchin and them he got the idea, he thinks its great fun spittin it out that he brushes like twice then spits and keeps on goin like that lol

Re: Toothpaste,

I've been using a baby toothpaste for my twins (19 months old) for a while now. It doesn't contain flouride, so there is no rinsing required and it's OK to swallow. I did the same with the first.   When my son was about 3, I switched him to a children's toothpaste with a tiny amount of flouride. I think by next year, I can probably switch him to an adult toothpaste.

Re: Toothpaste,

Hi Angie

I started Austin with toothpaste just after he turned 1. I didnt use the recommended pea sized amount thou, i only put enough on to just be visible on the bristles. Now he has about half a pea size and he loves it. I have to watch out for him running off and eating the toothpaste. lol.

I use the Macleans Milkteeth toothpaste. It says it is for first teeth to 6 years.
