It is very common.  All your fears that you try and hide during the day are dealt with in your sleep.  dreams are said to be a way that we rationalize our lives.

Re: Nightmares during pregnancy

I'm pregant with my fourth and have had vivid dreams and nightmares during each and every pregnancy. The dreams can be amazing, whereas the nightmares absolutely frightening! Thankfully once bub comes the dreams stop. I have no idea why this happens, but as far I can tell it is normal. Good luck with the pregnancy!

Re: Nightmares during pregnancy

Hi there, I was exactly the same. I had no nightmares that i recalled with my first pregnancy but with my second and third pregnancy i had nightmares. I believed it was more than likely due to any worries, concerns etc that may be on your mind and your subconcious playing on it resulting in bad dreams. I found that a hot milk. i loved malted milk . I used a drink called hollicks for my  last drink before bed and it seemed to help me.

You may also like to use methods to aid relaxataion such as having a bath, yoga for pregnancy even herbal tea work really well

Hope this helps and all the best with your bub

Re: Nightmares during pregnancy

Hi

I too had some nightmares and some quite gruesome dreams in my second pregnancy.. I vividly remember one dream i had where a giant circular saw went  right thru my car that i was driving in, and cut my daughter in half!!!!

My understanding of dreams, is that they are repressed feelings, and usually dramatically symbolic of the way you are feeling about your life at the time of the dream.. for eg.. i remember during the time that i had the dream that i had, I was mostly worried about sharing myself between 2 children..hence why Tay was cut in half in the dream i guess .. both scary and unsettling. But i think that when you vent any feelings that are worrying you, either by writing your fears down or telling a trusting friend or partner.. you release yourself somewhat from whatever stresses might cause unsettling nightmares.

Not really sure as to how much truth is in these things, it could be coincidence and I agree that high hormone levels most probably have more to do with how you are sleeping,,,Hopefully you get a good nights sleep soon.

Cheers from Mel xx

Re: Nightmares during pregnancy

Vivid dreams in pregnancy are very common.  I had them almose every night with my first.  Most were really crazy dreams about being giving birth to, and breastfeeding a cat, also had other dreams about car chases and other strange stuff.  All the dreams were really vivid and dramatic.

I think it has to do with the hormones, stress and everything else that comes with pregnancy.

Haven't had any since the birth.  So don't worry too much.  Good luck.

Re: Nightmares during pregnancy

These are quite common, mostly with first pregnancies, as you can tend to be fearful about stressed about how you will handle birth and then the ongoing responsibilities of motherhood.  Bad dreams tend to be your sub conscious response to an underlying stress.  In your case, as it is your 2nd, you might be worried about birth 2nd time around (particularly if your first experience was not easy) or you might be worried about how you're going to handle looking after 2 children now you know how much work it was just with one.  Or there could be other stressors in your life completely unrelated to your pregnancy.  I know I had nightmares and much more vivd dreams when I was pregnant (and I was definitely VERY nervous about the prospect of giving birth).  I found my dreams abated once I'd gone to ante natal classes and felt a bit more confident in my ability to handle the birthing process.  Just talking about your dreams and any underlying factors contributing to stress may help.
