Not sure wat to do

My son is 20 months old and he is always hungry, but my main problem is that he knows he isn't allowed in the kitchen at all, if I am sitting in the loungeroom he still tries to sneak into the kitchen to get to the food cupboards, but if we are in the kitchen he will not go into the kitchen at all. This has only just started in the last couple of months.

He use to stand at the entrance of the kitchen and whinge but now he is trying to get to all the food in the cupboards and any that is leftovers in the bin.

Is there anyway I can reinforce that he isn't allowed in the kitchen?? We do not nor can we afford to buy any baby gates/barriers for the entrance into the kitchen.

Re: Not sure wat to do

Take bub to the doctor NOW to ge thim checked out. There is a condition where they eat and dont stop because they are forever hungry. I am not saying he has this but it's best to make certain there arent any underlying conditions.

Put a velcro strip on the cupboard to lock them and also on the fridge to keep him out. He will then have two choices. 1. give you the container of allowed food or 2. throw a tantrum.

Yes I have taken him to the dr. we are waiting on test results atm, but it doesn't matter how much he eats he isn't getting fat or anything. So I am thinking it is worms, and so does the dr. but have to go bak for the test result on monday.

Buy some child clips to screw on the inside of your cupboard (very cheap). They make opening of cupboards childproof although it would depend whether you were renting or own your own house. You could also consider asking the owners for permission or just putty the holes up before you leave lol But you can also purchase some child locks that go on the outside. There are multipurpose latches (as cheap as a buck each), removable hooks, cabnit glide locks, sliding locks, secure-a-lock etc you can purchase them from most baby shops.

These are good ideas for the cupboards but he still tries to get into the bin and tries to eat outta that. Which is something I am more worried about than the cupboards as the food in the bin isnt hygenic and also old and could cause a lot more damage than good.

Is the rubbish bin small enough to put under the kitchen sink cupboard? You could lock it in there lol if you don't want it to touch the ground you can buy this cheap thing that sticks on the inside of the cupboard door to hold the bin up.

Re: Not sure wat to do

That is exactly what we did. We got the ones that screw into the inside of the cupboards, so you cant even see them, and when we leave here, we will just unscrew them and take them with us. We have found them to be great, Austin can try all he likes, but he cant get into the cupboards.

I believe they cost us about $10-$15 for a pack of 7 i think. Cant really remember.

Oh we also took the handles off the drawers too. Austin loved getting into the foil and gladwrap, plus he was getting tall enough to reach the knife drawer, so we just unscrewed the handles and put them away. He soon got sick of trying to open them and doesnt even go near them anymore.

Re: Not sure wat to do

Umm... I probably shouldn't have done this, as I can see all kinds of safety issues with it. So only even think about doing this if you;re close by and the child is stable on their feet. But I just leaned a peice of plywood accross the entry to my bedroom when my nephew was here- he's three. the wood was an old book shelf, so it was the width of the door way, and about a foot and a half high. He tried to climb over it, and it fell down, causing a very large bang. He left it alone after that, and wasn't hurt. but the main purpose was for him to know there was a line there that he couldn't cross- and was mainly so he wouldn't come in to chase my cats... Just a thought. The good thing about it was that it was low enough I could just step over it.

Hi Queen fire,

I saw you question about worms the other day and this might be a part of it. I know when children have worms they tend to be extra hungry and that is why your son continually wants food.

Hopet this helps

Re: Not sure wat to do

Yes I know why he is hungry but I have a container of healthy snacks for him to come to me to get one but he still wants to empty out the food cupboards, even though I have a full container of food. He also knows about this container as he often brings it to me when I am on the computer for short periods of times and he gets hungry.

I don't have any advice about how to help your son not to raid the kitchen, as my daughter is the same, but I was wondering what kinds of healthy snacks you use cause I could really use some ideas? :)

Re: Not sure wat to do

at 20 months it is the start of them becoming little ppl and starting to stretch the boundaries. My gf keeps saying to her 2 year old out of the kitchen and they have a line for them and thay are not allowed past that line. setting a mental barrier is a good idea. sadly it is a pain to have to reinforce it daily, but it will pay off later on.

if you can get fruit and have it in a container all cut up for him it might help with the food wanting.

(Oh and if you have a "normal" size door way check out the used baby places for the gates. i found mine for $10, also garage sales and in the paper)

Re: Not sure wat to do

We cant get a normal sized gate for the doorway it is extra wide and there is 2 of them so we ruled out that idea due to the fact it is going to cost us $180 just to block off the entrances.
