14 month old on a plane!

Just need a bit of advice as I'm taking my daughter on a flight. Its only an hr and a half but we will be on our own and she will have to sit on my knee the whole time. The flight is fully booked so we really won't be able to move round. Has anyone got any ideas for activities I can do with her/games we can play? Im going to bring some snacks and her fave toys but that will only keep her occupied for a short time!

Re: 14 month old on a plane!

Well, i travelled with my 16 1/2 month old few months ago.  It was 9 hour flight and again another 9 1/2 hour flight after the lay off.  The flight attendants were quite co-operative and plus the pple who were sitting next to me as well.  Whenever i had to go to the bathroom, she was well taken care of.  As you know how minimal space we have in the bathrooms.  It was getting pretty hard for me to change her even if there was a change table.  So, after trying once, i did not take a second chance with her.  All i did was put the on the floor, ofcoarse on the change pad, where they have their kitchen area or the food storing area and changed her diaper.

Please make sure that she is latched, if you are still nursing her and if not she is still drinking some kind of liquid or may be milk- during the time of take off and landing as well - so that she has no problems in her ears.  Since yours is a short journey, you could change her diaper just b4 you board the flight.

Please do not take tiny toys as it might be hard for you to find it, as it could be a big time chore especially the ones which roll.  Even musical toys may annoy the ones sitting next to you.  So just take stuffed toy which is not so big and not so small, which can be easy to find if dropped on the floor.

My little one did not let me watch any movie as she kept on touching the TV screen, which would make the movie either pause, stop or rewind and forward, as she found it pretty amusing.  Not quite sure if your little one is going to let you watch TV.

Well, Good luck and enjoy your flight.

Safe Journey.

If there are any tv shows or movies she likes a portable dvd player might also keep her amused for a little while - if you're really lucky it might keep her amused for the whole dvd.

Re: 14 month old on a plane!

I've taken my daughter on many interstate as well as international flights, between 6 months to 12 months of age. The best things I can suggest is 1) use a baby wrap/sling of some description so you can get around 'hands free'.

The one other thing I'd suggest is getting a bunch of lanyards or long shoelaces and tying a variety of toys etc to them & keep them around YOUR neck for bub to play with. (If she drops a toy while you're on the plane it becomes quite a chore to pick it up with an infant on your knee!)

(Oh, and 1 new book or toy is always good as it hold their attention just a bit longer!)  Happy flying!!

Re: 14 month old on a plane!

We recently took our now 19mth old on a flight that was a 2hrs journy,  We tried to book the flight so it was near his nap time.   We took his fav toys and also some books to read.  He was about  17mths when we went.  I must say he travelled well.

If you are in Australia you can book your seats online prior to going, that way you wont have to line up in the long que, when checking your bags in.   Try and get an asile seat this way you can look out the window and talk about things.  Also feed her lunch or what ever and then try and get her to have a nap.    Usually these days if you like you can pay to have the entertainment on which show movies etc...  (sml tv on the seat in front of you) We didn't need this.

With a few toys, books and food we didn't need any other games to keep him occupied as he slept some of the way too.   With a flight that is only an hour and a half it will be over b4 you know it!

hope this helps some what, good luck
