Help! Itchy red spots like mozzies bites

For the past two weeks, my son and I had these red bites on our body (neck, ear edge, armpits, shoulders, tummy and thigh). They look like mosquitoes bites but we dont remember being bitten at all. The red little swellings are about 0.6 to 10mm in diameter are really itchy.  They do not have any pus in them. Just kept us scratching a lot.

We have seen GPs twice - one told me it is viral and told us to use Calamine lotion to ease the itch while letting our immune system fight the virus.  Then when it did not work, another GP told us that it is some allergy and prescribed expensive Advantan hydrocortisone cream. It did not help much and the itch and red bites kept coming.

This morning when I bathed my boy, I was really disturbed to find more on his upper arm, four bites around same area and a few on his neck! I dont think it is bed bugs since I always wash my beddings in at least 60 deg water. And we sleep in different beds in different rooms.  My husband is totally fine.

Is there anyone who have this sort of 'encounter' before? I am wondering if we are allergic to something in our environment but we have been living in this house since one year ago.  It is summer here in Melbourne.

Sorry for the longwindedness and thanks for any advice!!!

Sound like some little bugs have found their way into your house (could be fleas or dust mites..  who knows)

Start with you bed linen and thoroughly wash everything.  Vacuum the bed (the actual bed not the floor around).  Then perhaps move onto couch covers.  Then maybe even have carpets cleaned.

I know this could get expensive (especially if it doesn't turn out to be the issue) which is why I suggest starting with your bedding.

The strange thing is hubby is perfectly fine.  I thought if it were bedbugs or fleas they are all visible to the naked eye? We had our little one's mattress vacuumed using a special vacuum head for dust mites and bedsheets are washed in hot water that kills dust mites. And we sleep in different beds in different rooms.  I will keep a look-out on the beddings.  This afternoon I supposedly napped in my boy's bed but I am fine so far, no bites. Thanks!

My three year old has just had same thing hers stared before christmas with one on her face the doctor said it was a bite and said if it gets worse she could be allergic so he gave us antibiotics which we didnt use she got better then more stared coming legs, rists, ankles my six year old had bites as well but wasnt itchy in the last three days all is well we were using stinggoes cream and blowing so it drys just to take her mind of it. So eventually all spots went I put it down to mozzies and leaving the back door open when they are sleeping they may have been getting in the screen so we dont open that one now.

Re: Help! Itchy red spots like mozzies bites

Hi there!

I am from Adelaide. I had a similar type of experience once. I found out that it was it was an alergy to bites from insects called thrips. They are very common this time of year when the weather is hot. Not every one is allergic to them, so, maybe that is why your husband it not itching.

Thrips also attach themselves to washing on the line and are very attracted to light colours  They maybe on clothes, sheets and towels you have picked off of the clothes line. They also thrive in long grass or vegitation.

To get rid of them spray the house with insectercide and dry you washing indoors or in the dryer.

If thrips are the cause don't worry as soon as the cooler weather comes they will be gone.

Re: Help! Itchy red spots like mozzies bites

Hi!

Yes I do gardening a bit and my boy does play in the garden while I am doing my thing. When thrips bite, do we know immediately? Are they visible to our eyes?  I have not seen anything biting us in the garden.  It is so puzzling.  But it could be since hubby has no problem as he does not go to the garden much. It is worth exploring and I will research more on that. Thanks for your sharing!

Re: Help! Itchy red spots like mozzies bites

I have two dogs. One is outdoor and the other is indoor-outdoor dogy.  I did wonder if it were fleas but I thought fleas are visible to the eye and they jump around? I do not see that on my dogs or anywhere in the house. And this is our third summer here in Melbourne and we did not have any problem with fleas before.

Do flea bites go to the face? I am actually getting better but not my boy.
