Re: when should i start solid food for baby

I started my son on cereal at 4-5 months, and then started him on fruits and vegetables at 6 months.  They say 4 month is okay to start cereal.

Re: when should i start solid food for baby

Current recomendations are to start around 6mths of age. The reason behind this is that somewhere between brith and 4-6mths the babies gut is open or virgin. Pathogens can pass into the bloodstream through this 'open' gut if they are introduced to early-this is thought to be what increases the risk of asthma, allergies intolerances etc. Sometime between 4-6mths the gut starts to close. Now no one unless they do scientific studies on the baby can tell if the gut has closed so the closer to 6mths before solids the better the chances that all will be ok.

As personal experience my first son had solids at 4.5mths on HP's suggestion (reason they told me is because he needed to sleep-crock of s**t). He now has food intolerances. My second son I didn't start offering til 6mths and he didn't take them til close to 8mths-nothing wrong with him at all.

Some signs that bub is ready are that they lose the tongue poke reflex, they can sit fairly unaided, the are unsatisfied with milk feeds despite them being increased and they show an interest in what you're eating (this last one is not an indication to start if it's the only sign.

Re: when should i start solid food for baby

Its generally advised to start at 5-6 months. Do so after a feed as your child will get the most nutrients from your milk. It is also suggested that when your child starts to show interest in food and reaches for it they are ready. Start with Farex and go from there. Your maternal health nurse will have a list of foods to introduce or alternatively the Royal Childrens Hospital have resources. Be prepared for a mess and have fun. It's a great time for Dads too as they can be more actively involved in nurturing your child so make sure he gets involved!

I started at 4.5 months and had no dramas at all...I've heard stories of babies refusing solids when they are  older....

Re: when should i start solid food for baby

My paediatrician said I would know when the time came to start solids.  Health experts are now saying 6 months and preferably when the baby is able to hold its head up.  I started feeding my son at 5 months and he was 3 weeks premature.  Start slowly with a small teaspoon of cereal then gradually increase, its amazing how much they can each once they grasp the concept.  All the best with starting solids it is very enjoyable watching the babies facial expressions and how messy they get.

Re: when should i start solid food for baby

Our family doctor told us that it has changed. Apparently it used to be 4 months, then there was a dispute over the recommendations and so it went up to 6 months. And now it's between 4 months and 6 months depending on how far along your child is developing. I don't think there's anything wrong with 3 months if they are developing very quickly but I did think it was ridiculous that my cousin kept feeding her daughter chocolate custard at 5 weeks old. Oh well, I didn't say anything because I know how annoying it is when people try to tell you the best thing for your kids when they're not professionals or asked.

I agree with 4months, however, my baby was born 4 kg and developed very fast, we had to start solids at 3 months, this seemed to suit him just fine. He loved it!...but of course it is an out of the ordinary case.

Re: when should i start solid food for baby

Your health nurse and other professionals will tell you to start solids at 6mths, but you will know when your baby is ready.

Your baby will be able to sit up unaided, ( no bouncer/rocker/swing or pillows)  have good head control.  Your baby will start to watch you eating your food, may try to grab some of it, he/she will start showing signs of chewing.  All these are in the lead up to feeding and may start as early as 4mth.   I wouldn't start any earlier as I just don't think a babies stomach can cope, it's not fully developed yet.

Start slowly with a smal teaspoon of baby cereal. then gradually work your way up to a meal then 2 then 3 etc...   It all takes time and patience.  I wouldn't rush it as kids grow up so fast these days!
