Are double prams safe?

My partner and I are trying for our 2nd baby soon and we've decided that while we have a bit of extra cash saved we are going to purchase any necessary baby equipment now. I am thinking of buying a 2nd hand pram on ebay - they are called double prams (there is a toddler seat in the front and an extra reclining seat behind for bubs). What I was wondering is if anyone has had good or bad experiences with these prams? I've heard they easily tip over? My son will probably be around 3 when baby comes along but as we want 4 children it may come in handy in the future. My son runs off and doesn't know how to walk on his own and the only way I can control him is when he is in a pram. Do you think he will be too old for a toddler seat by then? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Are double prams safe?

All prams have to pass a certain saftey test but you should go and have a test of some in store.
I have been playing with them all in the shops and have yet to find one I like, I think I am going to have to get a Phil and Teds pram which are very expensive so I'm looking out for sales or hopefully finding one second hand.

I think by 3 your son will be old enough to not need to pram all the time which is ok coz you can use your normal single pram when he doesnt, but if your planning on having 3-4 kids and any could be close in age a double pram would be worth while.

Re: Are double prams safe?

We have had 2 double prams now.  the first we got second hand, and it fell apart after a couple of years! lol. The second, we bought brand new ($400 worth) and it is still going strong.  Neither or them have had a tip risk.  They are more balanced, because the wheels are at the front and back, so the weight of the pram is distributed over a greater 'floor area'.  No sid tip either, as they are a bit like a tank.  The one we have now has 'power steering' or so it seems.  It is very sensitive to directional change and highly responsive.  a great off roader too! lol.  Ok, so it sounds like a car-  The same principals when buying a pram are used for buying a car.

- Are you comfortable with it?  Take the time to push is around for a while and see how well you can handle it.

-Is it easy to get the kids in and out of?  If it isn't, then probably going to be more of a hassle than a blessing.

-Does it have 5 point safety harness?  If not, then it doesn't meet Australian Standards and your children are going to be come master escape artists.

-Is it in your price range?  The lesser known brands produce just as good quality as the top name brands, and for about 1/3 the price as well.  We seem to pay a lot for a name these days (don't get me started on that! lol)

-Is it easy to fold down and put back up?  Very important if you are on your own with 2 (or more) kids.

-Is it going to fit in your car?  Double prams are rather bulky, so you need to ensure before buying one that it fits in the boot of your car.  No point buying one that requires the boot to stay open so it gets wet on a rainy day.

-The overall weight of the pram.  You need to be able to lift it on your own.  An overly heavy pram is not going to be very helpful if you can't lift it into your car.

- Colour?  does it really matter?  You can always cover it with a blanket if the colour doesn't suit.

Be very careful buying prams from Ebay.  You aren't going to be able to take it for a test drive, and they don't exactly have to be honest about the condition of it.  The listings that say 'comes as is' are rather scary.  For all you know, the wheels could be falling off all the time, which the seller isn't going to state, and because they  say 'comes as is' you can't complain about it either.

Your son will be around 3, so why not give him the opportunity to learn to walk?  He's going to have to learn at some point, and before a baby comes along might be best.  There are harnesses out there (got one here we don't use) that can help with this, and the good ones will be able to hook onto the pram too, freeing up your hands again.

Re: Are double prams safe?

I have a Phil and Teds double pram - it's great for combinations of new born and toddler up to two toddlers etc.  Very practical.  It has tipped over but only because my biggest kid was sitting in the back and I took the baby out of the front (biggest kid is suppose to be in the front! It's very expensive - so buy it in a sale or on ebay.

For safety you could check out "Choice" online consumer research website.  They test baby products.

Re: Are double prams safe?

Oh forgot to mention that my boy is 3 and sometime still sleeps in the pram (rarely) - but I don't think he could do this in a toddler seat. At times he wants to walk rather than go in the pram - which is fine because he holds my hand (so get one that you can push one -handed).  Then you can put your shopping in the seat.

Re: Are double prams safe?

Having a 35lb toddler and an infant, we just completed our research on double strollers.  We tried several out at stores, talked to other moms, and read on-line reviews of just about every model available.  Since our toddler was already near the weight limit on some of the toddler seats, and since he hates to be strapped down for any length of time, we ended up purchasing a Baby Trend Sit-N-Stand stroller.  With this model, the baby is in the front seat, and my toddler can sit on a little seat in the back or stand on a running board while holding onto a pair of handles.  This has been a true lifesaver for us.  I can honestly say that my toddler loves this stroller.  He enjoys being able to choose whether to sit or stand, and I can still keep him contained while shopping.  For a child who will be three when the baby comes, I would highly recommend getting a sit-n-stand stroller verses a double pram.  As for the safety of the prams, my friend has one and has not had any trouble with it tipping over, but her children are much closer in age.
