Re: hernia Operation

Hi Rukia,

I arent really sure about the belly button hernia, but my son had a hernia in his groin that they had to repair when he was only 3 weeks old. From what i remember (hes now 7yo) they were reinforcing the tear (the hernia is a tear in the wall of the intestine as I understand, not sure if it is in every case but his was i think, and the inside of the intestine protrudes thru that making like a bubble that can get restricted and caught in the tear and cause problems so thats usually why they repair, to prevent a bowel obstruction)  by stitching it back up i think .. anyways, he was only under anaesthetic for maybe 20 minutes and they did both sides and then into recovery after that.. i think it was about 45 minutes to an hour all up after they took him into surgery that they called me back to the recovery to see him again. If all goes to plan , and they do these operations all the time and as I understand it they are not as complicated to the specialists as they are to us, maybe a sleepover and then home the following day at the longest I would think , but I arent a doc so i couldnt be certain.

Locky had both sides of his groin done, and recovered fantastically with little or no problems at all so you can be sure to expect a speedy recovery. My advice would be to be very lighthearted about it, dont stress or worry too much about it and perhaps have the anaethatist explain what his job is, they are good with kids and wont say anything too scary.  perhaps just answering questions, ask what she wants to know and give her basic information that you are aware of already for eg: Will the doctor put me to sleep ?? answer.. yes and you will wake up all fixed at the other side. Hope that helps,

 Cheers from Mel xx
